Nzoner's Game Room>Antoine Winfield Jr. Gets Paid
Sassy Squatch 12:19 PM 05-13-2024

BREAKING: The #Bucs and All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. have agreed to a 4-year, $84M extension, making him the highest paid defensive back in NFL history, per @AdamSchefter. Massive payday for one of the young stars in the NFL. pic.twitter.com/JYWISLxUV1

Bit surprised he got that much more over Bates III.

Man, $21m/year for a safety.

Maybe I'm drunk on Dave Merritt, but I can hardly see how that's justfiable.

Perhaps we have Bucs fans on the board who argue this is justifiable.

I wouldn't pay prime Eric Berry 21 million a year in the modern cap world, so would you consider Winfield as good or better than him? Either way, it's a no for me. Tough call, but salaries at all positions are just going to keep increasing with all the new TV money. You'll probably see this deal left in the dust by next offseason.

The salaries constantly ballooning like this year to year all but kills any possibility of players signing early. The trade off just isn't worth it.

Wow. Haven't watched that much of Winfield, but Licht doesn't seem to overpay very often, so I guess this was the best deal he could come up with?

Luckily, KC can just keep drafting day 3 safeties and save a shit ton of cap space.

Because we all live in a world where cap space is a thing I wonder what defensive position suffers due to high DT and now possibly S contracts. On offense it looks like RBs and TE's that suffer for the sake of QBs and WRs.

I mean, all that's left is LB and nickel CB. Though, imo this contract is going to be a bit of an outlier. Just not that many really great S out there. Most of the $$$ is going to CBs, not safeties.

LBs unless they are edge/pass rushers.

Getting the highest DB pay is an impressive accomplishment when you're roughly the 75th best DB in the league.

Yeah, I think this is the new NFL. Especially for elite players.

Creed will sign when the Chiefs make him the highest paid C in football. I don't know about Bolton.

If Williams and Lawrence had played through their 5th year options and signed this offseason they probably break 30 million AAV.
