Police say a 94-year-old man shot and killed his wife May 22 at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters (Mo.) Hospital, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Police said the man turned the gun on himself after shooting his wife, who had been in the hospital for an illness for several days, according to KSDK. The man, whose name has not been released, survived the shooting with "significant injuries," according to police. The man has not been arrested or formally charged, according to KMOV.

In a lot of these cases, it turns out to be a mercy killing. I wonder if she was in so much pain that she was begging him to do it

And he couldn’t come up with a better way than shooting her?

Maybe he wanted to show mercy while also fulfilling a lifelong dream.

I can't think of a quicker way he could have stopped her suffering

According to Post-Dispatch he was 94 and she was 93. They lived at a St Charles retirement community. Dude simply couldn’t take any more, for whatever reason.

It was announced today he has also perished from the shootings.

There are calmer methods, sure, but probably nothing as quick nor as effective. They were in a hospital, so chances are slower methods would be stopped.

Assuming this is a mercy killing, good for him. I'd gladly sign up for a life that ends with my wife and I going out together and on our own terms in our 90s like that.

Even if we stipulate that, he traumatized the hospital staff by doing that.

I guessing he cared more about his wife's suffering

Well, maybe there should be legal methods of doing what he did. Some states (including Colorado) allow it.

And while I feel for the hospital staff, it's not like they're in a job where death is a rare thing to have to deal with.
