Nzoner's Game Room>What have you done with your CD collection?
mr. tegu 10:47 AM 08-07-2022
I’ve got a huge box of CDs I really don’t know what to do with. A few years back I took the time to put them on the computer so I have them digital now. But now they seem mostly worthless just taking up space. Have you thrown yours out? Keeping them for nostalgia? Are they worth anything? Better to just sit on them for any reason?

Yes, I still have my CD's and vinyl records.
Spent a couple grand recently on Rotel BT Integrated Amp and Rotel separate CD player along with Klipsch tower speakers for home to match my AT Turntable.

Had > 200 CD’s before the upgrade, have purchased another 50 or so on eBay over the past couple of months. CD’s run $5-8 on EBay these days, where vinyl copies run $20-30.

If I ever dump Spotify, Ill still have >500-600+ hard copies of my favorite music forever.

Experiencing a musical renaissance.

Right.

You used a program that was connected to the internet to make that happen, first of all.

Second, homeboy done said "no effin' itunes".

JetAudio is the answer. Promise.

some people claim that if you rip all of your CD's -- and throw them away--you are violating copyright laws because you do not have proof that you paid for the music.

I personally do not care.

what say you?

I've heard people say DVDs are useless since everything is streaming but that sounds dumb as shit to me.

First, a lot of streaming costs money and who wants to pay when you have a copy already. Second, movies are constantly getting edited to fit today's standards. I'm still considering going out and buying stuff like Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds since I could easily see scenes being cut from those. Hell its becoming harder and harder to see the original version of the Star Wars trilogy and they claim those are never getting released again.

Exactly- it's the same as music. There's a reason why a copy of the RL cut of Zep II goes for such insane money :

https://better-records.com/products/...7cc64a67&_ss=r

(Mine is actually still in the shrink with a "contains the new hit single 'Whole Lotta Love'" hype sticker - if BR can get $2k for their 'nearly white hot' copy...mines may be worth $2500 or pushing $3k)

It's because you can't buy that particular mastering ANYWHERE - the RL is #1, followed fairly distantly by the George Piros remaster and the aforementioned Barry Diament 80s digital transfer. The RL Zep II is SO dynamic, check this out :

Atlantic Records head honcho Ahmet Ertegun had 2 teenage daughters in the late 60s. This is a guy whose label had been the preeminent R&B, jazz and blues label of the 50s and early 60s. He routinely would bring home test pressings of upcoming releases of the pop and rock artists on his label for his teenage daughters' feedback. Home market research. So, like when Disraeli Gears or Deja Vu were first mastered and they made the first 10 test pressings for everyone to approve, Ahmet's teenage daughters would throw those things on their little Woolworth bedroom record player with the little cheap ceramic stylus. And those things were really "record scratchers" more than "record players".

And they got Led Zep II and tossed it on, and when the drums kicked in on 'Whole Lotta Love", that cheap ceramic stylus literally couldn't track the shit and would bounce out of the groove. Bomham's drums scared the shit out of it.

So Ahmet had George Piros remaster it. They halted production and George seemingly used Robert Ludwig's notes with Ahmet's instructions to turn it down a bit. So George's cut is at about 80% of the volume. It sounds great. But compared to the RL...the RL has the magical "IT" factor.

And maybe 50k of them got out. Of a record that has sold like 8 million copies.

And what's available on Spotify or youtube will NEVER sound like THAT RL cut

I have over 1000 CD’s. I don’t use them - I rip them - but I buy them because the bands actually make a little money. I detest streaming.

That explains why they sound like shit when I play them on the turntable.

Does anyone have 45's or 78's anymore?

Do people still have players for them?
