Overview
When you think about strong, forceful inside linebackers, Bolton is the type of player you might be envisioning. He's going to fall below typical NFL starter standards from a size standpoint, but his rugged frame and forceful demeanor help make up for it. Play recognition and pursuit instincts help carry him to the football and he's a message-sending striker when he gets the runner squared up. He has functional short-area burst between the tackles but will struggle to run down the outside run if he's not close enough to the action. He will need to lean heavier on his instincts to help speed him up because of size and speed limitations. Bolton plays with good field recognition when dropping into zone and has a history of making plays on the football in coverage. He's a three-down linebacker who can make an immediate contribution on special teams and has the potential to become a future starter.
Strengths
  • Very tough with a physical edge.
  • Plays with demeanor teams look for in the middle.
  • Field-savvy with instincts to diagnose misdirection.
  • Identifies and communicates.
  • Heavy hands with good pop to take on blocks.
  • Pursues ball-carrier with patience and leverage.
  • Fluid alterations to his pursuit angles.
  • Excellent feel for attack timing downhill.
  • Meets runners with violent collisions in the hole.
  • Strikes like he's trying to send a message.
  • Great awareness and ballhawking as spot dropper.
  • Has enough man-cover talent to play on all three downs.
  • Thrived on kick- and punt-cover teams early in his career.
Weaknesses
  • Average lateral quickness traps him behind climbing blocks.
  • Inconsistent to strike and separate from blockers.
  • Needs to improve angles to elude box traffic.
  • Might need to take a few more chances as a pro.
  • Top-end speed appears below average.
  • Loses ground when pursuit flows wide.
  • Below-average lateral agility as open-field tackler.
  • Will have to play quicker to deal with NFL slashers.

I thought he picked 32 because he wanted to rip people's heads off.

Most solo tackles, season: Donnie Edwards, 114 (2000)
Most solo tackles, game: Eric Berry, 14 (2014)

Bolton will break both of these team records. Maybe this year.

Within 2 years, Bolton will be the unquestioned leader of the defense.

Similar “Coach on the Field” to Hitchens, but actually good at football.

If you haven't paid close attention to the Chiefs’ defense, you probably missed out on a rookie sensation who is poised to become a household name in 2022. The young tackling machine quickly emerged in Steve Spagnuolo's defense with his instincts, awareness and play-making skills repeatedly showing up on tape. With Bolton flashing All-Pro ability as a sideline-to-sideline defender who logged 112 tackles as a first-year starter, the football world could soon find out about the league’s next great linebacker.

This guy is a cross between Mike Singletary and Brian Urlacher!

He should easily crush Edwards record. He finished with 112 last year and didn’t even start the whole season.

Even games he did start he was underutilized.

I mean it's the weirdest thing but also he didn't get injured so maybe that's okay?

We never have to worry about seeing Nieman again. Instead we have a human missile in Chenal.

I expect this team to be impossible to run on, including pesky QBs.

In 7-on-7s, LB Nick Bolton intercepted Mahomes. Justin Reid nearly had it as well. Bolton was the best defensive player on the day, ripping out a pass from the grasp of WR Omar Bayliss later.

It's actually Bayless. He was an UDFA with the panthers last year.

I think the linebacker corps is what I'm most excited about on the defensive side. They have a chance to be a real strength for the first time in years.

Our LBers may kill someone on the field this season. Hoping it’s Brady.
