I think he's pretty sure of what has happened already, but isn't addressing it right now. It will be interesting to see if he will take out his brother since he had no problem offing a cousin. [Reply]
There's just nobody in this season that's a match for Raylan except Boyd, but Boyd's not in conflict with Raylan (yet). Maybe the black tar cartels from Mexico, but they're not in conflict with Raylan.
This has been a criticism of mine since season 3, when Quarles went down and Limehouse pulled away from getting into direct conflict with Raylan. Those two were great matches for Raylan. Sammy Augustine in season 4 sure was as well, but he was only a late season add.
The only real thing pushing Raylan right now isn't a big bad, but is his own misdeeds that he's going to be reeling from. That's a fascinating angle, but they barely touched on it this week.
The "can Boyd break out Ava" storyline is meh, because you know he's going to break her out. And it's only a matter of time before he dispatches Johnny and the Crowes. There's no suspense there.
The suspense is in how the work with Mexico is going to go, because like Raylan's issues with Art, I have no idea where that's going to go. But they're playing both those story lines really, really light right now. The more time they dedicate to them, the better this season will go.
This season isn't as much about Raylin as it is about Boyd. Boyd vs. the Crowes, Boyd + the Crowes, Boyd vs. the legal system, Boyd vs. Johnny, etc. I imagine they'll shift back to Raylin at some point, but the Amy Smart arc just isn't anywhere as interesting as anything Boyd is doing.

A lot of it, is to be expected. This is a set up. Expect season 6 to be balls to the wall. They have an awful long road to hoe with setting up the epic showdown that inevitably will be with Boyd, and Raylan having one last stare down. I bet you can see Ava in the end, with the Shotgun, while Raylan and Boyd are at the dinner table again.
Just my thoughts on it. This thing with Art has been building for a couple of years too. As for having someone to challenge Raylan, the last person I really felt that truly did that, was BO Crowder in Season one. Raylans character is so swag that no one is going to measure up.
Boyd Crowder, he measures up, but its just on a different plane. Hes a completely different kind of swag. Plus, when you do this, its hard really to ever look at you differently.
This is setting up like last year where lots of dialog for the first 8 or 9 episodes and then the last four or five really pick up. Last year's episode where Raylan is in the school guarding Drew Thompson was one of the best episodes in the series and very little in terms of violence, but it led up to it. I can't wait for the Boyd vs. Raylan season six arc. Love to see the final scene be Raylan and Boyd sitting across the table from each other just like episode one. [Reply]
I just watched this week's episode. I thought it was good, it started down the path to clear up some things. I feel bad for Dewey though. He it's going to die. Just haven't figured out if it's going to be Danny, or Boyd. [Reply]
We need to spend less time on Ava in prison. We know Boyd will get her out. And we need to spend less time on Johnny and/or the Crowes. We know Boyd and/or Raylan will outmaneuver them.
The only suspense this season is in the Raylan vs. Art storyline and the Mexican drug cartel storylines. Those two storylines can more than carry a full season, but they've barely, barely touched on them.
That's why I really like the Big Bad format. People shit on that, but this show has written Raylan and Boyd up to be damn near undefeatable (Raylan especially), which is fine but you need somebody who's equal to them, or close to it, to make the show suspenseful. Seasons 2 and 3 were great in that regard, as the Bennetts/Quarles/Limehouse were excellent foes.
Season 4 was so well written and acted that it was a breath of fresh air from the Big Bad format, but it's just really hard to see how Season 5 can replicate that.
What's Season 5 about? Can anybody even tell me what it's about? Season 2 was about the Bennetts. Season 3 was about Quarles/Limehouse. Season 4 was the Drew Thompson mystery. Season 5 is just a bunch of things kind of happening.
Love Justified, it's still well written dialogue and brilliantly acted. But we need some better plotting.

this season, the best example I can give is this season is, the TWO TOWERS, or Justified. Nothing really was finalized in the Two Towers, but everything was set up towards something else. Kinda like planting the seeds.
