Nzoner's Game Room>Veach's '21 Offseason Plan to Keep Us Thriving: Let's speculate
Dante84 10:03 AM 02-08-2021
In order to prevent us wasting precious years of Patrick Mahomes' career, Veach needs to work some magic this offseason. What's your advice for him?

They could actually do it after June 1st. That cap room could be used to sign draft picks.

The author of the article I linked acknowledged that and still presented Kelce as a potential trade candidate after June 1. Not sure?

The Chiefs aren't waiting until June to address the center position. It will be one of the first things they do when free agency starts I would imagine, unless they're targeting someone in the draft. Even then, it will be done by early May.

I really don't understand the fascination with Kelce.

I mean people do understand he's not TRAVIS Kelce, right?

I mean what the fuck?

They would have paid him $3 million in bonuses by June 1st, making their Dead Cap hit to release him at more than $10 million.

If they plan to release him, it'll need to happen before the new league year begins in March.

Which they can't do because the dead money would be too high. They've already used their June 1st designations.

Kelce ain't going anywhere.

Exactly.

Even though I despise PFF and think it's completely worthless, Austin Reiter graded out one point higher than Kelce, which is hilarious to me considering that so many people on CP (wrongfully) think that Reiter "sucks".

:-)

Reiter is a good pass blocking center, but is worthless as a run blocker.

Reiter is a good center for KC. Even Chief Fan understands that.

They currently have a left tackle, his name is Eric Fisher.

They can agree to a trade now, and consummate it after June 1st.

I'm not pretending I'm a cap expert or anything, but based on OTC and Sportrac that just isn't true.

First of all, the $10 million in bonuses are guaranteed and the Eagles will have to eat the cap charge no matter what. The only difference is cutting or trading Kelce after June 1st would allow them to spread it out over this year ($3 million) and next year ($7 million).

Kelce's bonus is prorated over three void years at the end of the contract, so that will accelerate when the contract ends even if they keep him. The only thing the Eagles can get out of is Kelce's 2021 base salary of $5.5 million. Basically the Eagles have three options:

1. Keep Kelce. Cap hits - 2021: $8.4 million; 2022: $7.2 million (dead)
2. Cut Kelce now - 2021: $10.1 million; 2022: $0
3. Cut Kelce after June 1 - 2021: $2.9 million; 2022: $7.2 million (dead)

So if Kelce is insistent that he'll retire rather than play for the Eagles in 2021, they don't really have a lot of incentive to keep him.

So that he can miss all of OTA's with his new team?

It isn't happening.

He's a three-time All Pro who has played most of his career in Reid's system, and would be in for all of training camp. And anyway, are we even having OTAs? I'm sure he can catch up on whatever Zoom meetings he misses.

Edge Romeo Okwara - PFF 3 years $19.5 million ($10 million guaranteed) from PFF

BUT...

Spotrac.com says market value is 3 years $30.3 million ($10.1 million average)

He is 25 years old and 6-4, 263. He had 44 tackles with 10 sacks last year. I'd love to sign him up as a Chief, but $10 million per year might be out of our CAP room.
