If so, that has to be one of the more devastating decisions in KC front office history.
The Chiefs offered Smith a nice contract and he wanted to test free agency. He didn't get an offer from anyone for as much as the Chiefs offered, so he came back and wanted to accept the original offer. The Chiefs told him they would match the best offer he got which was from the Broncos. He refused to play for the Chiefs unless they paid him more and signed a contract with Denver for less money than what the Chiefs had originally offered him.
Worse yet, he opened a restaurant in KC with his name on it. After what happened with him going to Denver and the crap he did in all that, why did he think the KC area would support his restaurant? Unsurprisingly, it went bankrupt. [Reply]
I didn’t remember that we had ever offered him a deal, but I was also 5 years old at the time and everything about Smith I had read later from other sources. [Reply]

IIRC, at the time it happened, it was not a bad call. Blackledge was a consensus good pick. It just turned out that he was the worst pick we could make.
But, it was before I moved back from overseas, and I was only 12 so... [Reply]
