Chuck Schumer tonight: Trump’s border wall is “ineffective” and “unnecessary”

Chuck Schumer in 2009: "630 miles of border fence" made our southern border "far more secure" because it "created a significant barrier to illegal immigration" pic.twitter.com/3ywVpKu2LH

I do. You should, too.

He's right that Trump had 2 years to get this done and sat ass the whole time. This has been a hallmark of the GOP controlled Congress - they only want to try to do something when it's clear that they won't be able to do it.

Republicans should be righteously pissed that it's come to this. Where the hell was this urgency a year ago? Why didn't we get ANYTHING done w/r/t immigration when we had both chambers and why do we suddenly think its going to happen when we don't?

The GOP showed no stomach for this fight when it was one they had a chance to actually win big on. Now that the best they can do is some kind of negotiated stalemate, we have people trying to dig in.

Oh I'm not sure that's very accurate at all... I think the 'motherfuckers' of the GOP, Ryan, McCain, Flake, 'motherfucked' their party and the cause they were supposedly aligned with.

People like those three were the greatest gift ever presented to the Dems... Plain and simple..

I get what you are saying but waiting until the Dems control the house kind of makes them the bad guy for not giving in on border security to shutdown the government.

Liberals here can argue otherwise but the Dems look worse on this right now from an optic standpoint. The fact Trump was able to look more diplomatic than Chuck and Nancy the other night shows just how ridiculous the Dems are right now. They look like pouting fools.

On top of that you have their own statements in support of a wall/fence not too long ago. They look like clowns. Well bigger clowns, as they all look like clowns.

For those acting like $5 billion is a trivial sum to flush down the toilet: two of Obama’s top priorities for all of 2016 were $1 billion for Zika precautions & $2 billion for the opioid epidemic.

House and Senate Republicans both refused all year, calling it wasteful spending.

I remember RWNJs freaking out about much much smaller sums of money than this. But yeah $5B is nothing.

Republicans were the party of NO for 8 years under Obama. And every right-winger on this forum absolutely loved it.

:-) wonder if Brad is responding to suzzer here?

Honestly this scares me about Democrat math. It is actually $15 DOLLARS per American. This is the best money spent for our security ever. https://t.co/3TpfYHkjy1

That's not the point. The point isn't the optics or the politics of it - that's WHY we have shitty border security and why he have a ridiculous illegal immigration problem.

Be the !@#$ing bad guys, GOP - you got your asses waxed in the House anyway and Trump fatigue will have you losing the White House soon enough. You should've grabbed your balls, been the !@#$ing adults in the room and said to hell with the 'optics' - we have the votes to get something done and we are going to do so.

The friggen Democrats ALWAYS do that when they're in power. They get 2 years in control and they pass the god-awful ACA. And with one more vote they'd have rammed single payer through (thanks again, Ted). You give the Republicans a super majority and they'd still only get a tax cut passed that does little to fundamentally alter the tax code and the argue amongst themselves for 18 months.

The failure of the last 2 years to accomplish any meaningful long-term policy goals is just staggering. It's all been work in the margins that can be undone the moment Trump leaves the oval.

The GOP spent so much time watching polls and worrying about what was popular that they never bothered to actually be the grown ups in the room and do what needed to be done. Oh, and I have bad news w/r/t to 'the bad guys' - this won't have any significant long-term impact on the Democrats either. Nothing ever does.

By the time 2020 rolls around, whatever happens here to damage the Democrats will have been forgotten about. Meanwhile GOP turnout will be shit because the Republicans put in office can't point to any meaningful legislation passed on their watch so why bother turning up?
