Overview
Former five-star defensive end who looks the part but doesn't have the production to go with the traits. Kaindoh has good length but is inconsistent in activating it properly, as his upper-body strength falls a little short. He doesn't have the natural gait and fluid movements of fellow FSU defensive end prospect Janarius Robinson and tends to stay blocked once his opponent gets into his frame. There are occasional flashes as a rusher, but if he doesn't take an early lead, he's unlikely to get home. He might be worth a look later in the draft based purely upon the traits.
Strengths
  • Long, NFL-caliber frame with even more room for muscle.
  • Adequate upfield spring off the snap and into neutral zone.
  • Initial quickness and body lean help him knife into B-gap on slants.
  • Uses length to separate and set the edge.
  • Capable of getting from one edge to the other with his rush counter.
  • Speed-to-power conversion potential as a pro.
  • Length could become more effective rush weapon with work.
Weaknesses
  • Has dealt with injuries and made just 10 career starts.
  • Looked as though he were favoring left ankle at times.
  • Play tends to be segmented and lacks athletic fluidity.
  • Doesn't use size traits to command the rep.
  • Below-average rush with only one sack in his last 11 games.
  • Inaccurate hand slaps fail to open outside rush lanes.
  • Not enough bend to dip below punch at top of the rush.
  • Runs out of gas during chase.

Josh Kaindoh was drafted with pick 144 of round 4 in the 2021 draft class. He scored a 9.59 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 57 out of 1371 DE from 1987 to 2021. https://t.co/3f2nfXUEc0 #RAS #Chiefs pic.twitter.com/rWEvQMxEZv

Loved this guy in round 5.

He’s a former 5 star. Great measurables.

You all will like this pick after you dig in. Trust me.

Yep. He's a developmental pass rusher. Pretty high upside.

In Veach I trust.

But not the pick I would have made. There is a reason I’m not the GM for a team that has been to back-to-back Super Bowls though. Do like his upside and measurables.

Florida state sucks at developing guys so he’ll probably be good.

Very much a Kpass esque upside pick.

Joshua Kaindoh

POSITIVES—Long, at nearly 6'6" with a 6'9 7/8" wingspan which is one reason he was a blue chip recruit as a prep.
—Very strong hands inside, which gives him a path to win in the NFL, despite his lack of production.
—Has better burst and quickness than one would assume of someone with his frame.
—He’s a secure tackler in the backfield, finishing pressures in the pass and run game that he started.
—Has untapped potential, as it does not seem that his body is fully developed because of missed time on the field.
—Understands how to influence the quarterback’s throwing lane.
NEGATIVES
—Despite being bursty, he’s not bendy.
—Potentially in between positions right now in terms of his gameday playing weight.
Videos you might like

—Can slow-play coming off of the ball too much, which is why his get off is inconsistent.
—Runs too wide at times when bending the edge, potentially a result of his lack of bend.
2020 STATISTICS
14 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 1 touchdown, 1 pass deflection
NOTES
—Consensus blue chip prep out of Maryland who played at IMG Academy in Florida as a senior and participated in the Under Armour All-American Game.
—Played in just 31 of Florida State’s potential 47 games over the last four seasons, partially because of injuries.
—Only recorded one sack in the last two seasons.
OVERALL
If you evaluate Joshua Kaindoh on the statsheet, his selection in the NFL draft will not be contextualized. He is a talented, long, strong and bursty defensive end prospect who did not meet his potential at the college level after playing for three coaching staffs and suffering injuries. From a traits perspective, he has upside at a position where pass-rushing upside is almost the only factor, which is why he’ll be given the opportunity to be a better professional player than a college player. Body-type-wise, he may find himself in a position like former Florida State defensive end Mario Edwards, where he will come to a fork in the road and have to make the decision if he is going to grow into being a bigger defensive end who plays a good amount on the interior, or if he is going to live on the edge as a strong edge-setter who can jump inside mid-play based on offensive tackles’ leverage.
GRADE: 7.6/10 (3rd Round)
OVERALL RANK: 78/300
POSITION RANK: EDGE12
PRO COMPARISON: Mario Edwards

The only reason this guy wasn’t a day 2 pick is injuries and coaching.

Another high upside pick in the 4th like Sneed last year.

Honestly doesn't seem like we should be surprised by this one. Big athlete who is raw and could be a good pass rusher if he gets coached up. Right up Spags alley.
