Crazy Stat: Patrick Mahomes could throw 15 touchdowns the rest of his career and still finish with more career touchdown passes than Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman.

Final ruling: Didn't suck, but really overrated considering he's a HOFer
Good completion numbers, but not a standout in other stats (yds, TDs).
He just didn't throw that much for someone considered a "star." Only 3 seasons in the top 10 in attempts when he ranked 7th, 8th and 10th.
Only had 1 year where he received any votes for MVP, when he finished 5th with 3 votes in 1993.
FWiW, on Pro Football Reference's Pro Football QB Hall of Fame Monitor (since 1955), he rates 64 points, which is 36th out of 37 QBs in the HOF. Jim Kelly is lower. Average QB HOFer is 104 points.
Ranked among all QBs, he's a little behind Rich Gannon.
You could make a similar case against Elway, but even a lot of Chiefs fans will admit he was a great QB.
I think Aikman was pretty clearly a good QB, though definitely a step down from guys like Montana, Young, Favre, Elway. [Reply]
Troy sucked so bad that even some of his fans think he doesn't belong in the hall of fame. Trust me without that o line and Emmitt smith he's nothing. Pat is hall of fame without thinking about it he's that good. [Reply]

Aikman would have just been another mid-tier QB on another team during that span.
he would have succeeded on most teams due to his overwhelming talent
before the mobile QB revolution he was considered an almost perfect specimen as a pocket passer - you couldn't build a better QB in a lab
concussions robbed him of a lengthier and more productive career [Reply]
