Crazy Stat: Patrick Mahomes could throw 15 touchdowns the rest of his career and still finish with more career touchdown passes than Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman.

completing 70 percent of your passes in 1993 was fucking HARD
What a bs stat. In Aikmans day they ran the ball in for TD's inside the 5. Today they pass it in from short yardage(thats why Aikman has low TD pass numbers) because priorities today are 1. Get QB TD passes 2. Win the game
(Pete Carrol always comes to mind). Not to take away from Patty but how many TD passes have been from inside the 5? 50? 60? Aikman just didn't have that elite skill to complete those 2 yard shovel pass TD's like Mahomes [Reply]
QBs who have thrown more touchdowns than Aikman in their career:
Jon Kitna
Brad Johnson
Chris Chandler
Ryan Tannehill has THIRTY FOUR more touchdowns and has played two less years than Aikman did and he has been carried by running backs his entire career.
These are the guys you should be comparing Aikman to. Lmao at completion percentage. [Reply]

This. You can't compare anyone from today's game with QBs from that era. QB's in that time had to worry about being knocked into next week. Today a smart QB can play close to a non contact sport. QB's had to worry about making throws that would get their WR's killed, today WR's can't be hit hard. Aikman didn't have a radio in his helmet so the coach could hold his hand and talk him through every situation. [Reply]

You're full of shit. Steve DeBerg got murdered his entire career, played far less games than Aikman and didn't even really start games until he came to KC and managed to throw 31 more touchdowns than Aikman did. [Reply]

I said you can't compare todays QB's with 80's and 90's QBs. You are right though Deberg was better. It's about TD passes not winning games [Reply]
If Aikman in the 90s was playing in a bygone era, then how about Aikman compared to the dudes of the 50s, 60s, and 70s? You know, when just throwing more TDs than INTs in a season was considered really good.
The most TDs Aikman threw in a season was 23.
Len Dawson threw for more than 23 TDs six times. And he played during the era of 14-game seasons. [Reply]

I feel like it's a good time to mention that in general it's hard to kick field goals when the goalposts are moving [Reply]

he was a runner up in MVP voting several times
dumbass
He didn’t even hit 70% in 1993. You don’t round up from 69% just because he’s your zaddy for some stupid ass reason. Of course, as you know but are being too obtuse to admit, Aikman spent the rest of his career chucking up 61% on average, many years below 60%. And he was NEVER runner up for MVP, what the fuck are you talking about? In his best year, he finished fifth in the voting. Emmitt won, because duh, he’s why the Cowboys were good. [Reply]

Wow. Well this perfectly sums up Aikman and being over-rated.
Clay must have a fetish with his monstrous hands or something? [Reply]
At first, I assumed Aikman was a lot better than he was. Clay's enthusiastic defense of him immediately made me reconsider.
Final ruling: Didn't suck, but really overrated considering he's a HOFer
Good completion numbers, but not a standout in other stats (yds, TDs).
He just didn't throw that much for someone considered a "star." Only 3 seasons in the top 10 in attempts when he ranked 7th, 8th and 10th.
Only had 1 year where he received any votes for MVP, when he finished 5th with 3 votes in 1993.
FWiW, on Pro Football Reference's Pro Football QB Hall of Fame Monitor (since 1955), he rates 64 points, which is 36th out of 37 QBs in the HOF. Jim Kelly is lower. Average QB HOFer is 104 points.
Ranked among all QBs, he's a little behind Rich Gannon. [Reply]
