If you look at peak seasons according to PFR's Approximate Value, here's your all-time defense.

S - 1984 Deron Cherry
S - 1968 Johnny Robinson
CB - 1989 Dale Carter
CB - 1974 Emmitt Thomas
OLB - 1991 Derrick Thomas
OLB - 1969 Bobby Bell
MLB - 1973 Willie Lanier
DE - 2007 Jared Allen
DE - 1993 Neil Smith
DT - 2023 Chris Jones
DT - 1969 Buck Buchanan

BTW - I reserve the right to move Chris Jones up to 2 on my list should things progress well enough over the coming weeks.

He'd have probably been no lower than three 12 months ago when I was sure we'd get a deal done reasonably simply with him and he'd end his career here before eventually getting a gold jacket.

The holdout didn't sit well. And if he goes to the damn dirty Broncos or something, he's as dead to me as Neil Smith and Tony Gonzalez.

The best that I've seen play as an adult.
2. Gary Barbaro - this guy would absolutely be a Hall of Famer if he didn't go to the USFL
3. Albert Lewis
4. Deron Cherry
5. Art Still - underrecognized because he played 3-4 end on bad teams.
Emmitt was great and leads Chiefs by a wide margin for all time INT leader when they threw half as much.

Barbaro and Still were the bomb and played amazing on horrific teams. Never mailed it in.

Mentioned both of these guys earlier so you and I have endured the same pain during the 70's and 80's.

Great post! :-)

Derrick Thomas
Derrick Johnson
Justin Houston
Tamba Hali
Chris Jones

McDuffie will be in the top 5 very soon though.

No Orlando Scandrick, Mike Hughes, Steven Nelson or that guy who never seemed to get his head turned around?

Every. Single. Snap. As. A Rookie.

Every snap.

Mind boggling.

Then his career was cut short by cancer of all things. Just a robbery. He probably would have been a hall of famer if not for fucking cancer...

I agree with this but you left off Nick Bolton who will be the greatest MLB/ILB weve ever had and one of the all time NFL greats.

If we look at career AV on PFR, here's the all-time offensive team.

RB - Priest Holmes
RB - Jamaal Charles
QB - Len Dawson (Patrick Mahomes II is about three seasons from passing him at his current pace.)
WR - Otis Taylor
WR - Tyreek Hill
TE - Travis Kelce
OT - Jim Tyrer
OT - John Alt
G - Will Shields
G - Ed Budde
C - Jack Rudnay

OLB - Bobby Bell

MLB - Willie Lanier

That seems almost exactly right

Oh yeah!

Honestly I was tempted to put CJ, McDuffie, LJ, and Bolton because they led the way to win two Super Bowls and that trumps almost everything else for me. (DT would still make it in the top 5 though.)

I know there were some great players pre-DT but I never actually watched any of them play.

I weep for Barbaro's USFL decision.

He played for the Chiefs for 6.5 seasons (losing half to a player's strike).

In NFL history, only 6 safeties had more interceptions through their first seven seasons. And add to that the fact that he was a 6'-4" free safety who hit like a truck. He may actually be the best defensive player in Chiefs history, and no one's heard of him.

Three seasons???? I have some questions about this metric...

I never saw Dawson play and I know he's a legend but Mahomes has already eclipsed him for sure.

Will we be doing an All Time Top 5 Offensive Players for the Chiefs as well?
If so, I bet that Mahomes kid will get a few votes...
