Honestly, I felt it was fair before Mahomes. Yes, Alex Smith seemed to always beat them, but the NFL normally comes down to QB play. The Chargers simply didn't identify QB talent when they saw it. They don't get an excuse any more than the Browns, Bears, Jaguars, Jets, Bengals, or Bills.
