1. Dalvin Tomlinson, DT, Vikings. Age: 29.
Dalvin Tomlinson is a stellar defensive tackle who can generate great pressure and also play the run very well.

2. Fletcher Cox, DT, Eagles. Age: 32.
Fletcher Cox has been one of the top defensive tackles in the NFL since he entered the NFL in 2012. However, he's coming off a down year in which he was beaten up against the run.

3. Da'Ron Payne, NT, Redskins. Age: 26.
Da'Ron Payne had a great start to his career, at least until 2022. He had a down year, so perhaps he'll rebound next season.

4. David Onyemata, DT, Saints. Age: 30.
David Onyemata has enjoyed some tremendous years in New Orleans, though he's coming off a down season. He was rather average in 2022. He just turned 30, so perhaps he's now on the decline.

5. Javon Hargrave, DT, Eagles. Age: 30.
Javon Hargrave was a dynamic interior pass rusher for the Eagles last year, though he was constantly beat up against the run.

6. Poona Ford, NT, Seahawks. Age: 27.
Poona Ford is coming off a down year, but was previously known as a stout run defender. Perhaps he'll rebound in 2023.

7. Matt Ioannidis, DT, Panthers. Age: 29.
Matt Ioannidis is a solid, well-rounded defensive tackle with no weaknesses.

8. Dre'Mont Jones, DT, Broncos. Age: 26.
Dre'Mont Jones tends to get trampled in run support, but he's a solid pass-rushing presence with 18.5 sacks in the past three years.

9. Sheldon Rankins, DT, Jets. Age: 29.
Sheldon Rankins has a dubious injury history, but he performed well in all regards last year.

10. Akiem Hicks, DE/DT, Buccaneers. Age: 33.
Akiem Hicks missed half the year with an injury. He's 33 now, but he can still be a stout run defender.

If Payne makes it to FA, I'd hope Veach would go after him. Pair him with Jones and enjoy the show.

Payne would be incredible, honestly.

If it's not him, I'd honestly say fuck it and go with Hargrave and make it a point to terrorize QBs even if it's a sacrifice against the run... which shouldn't be any dropoff compared to what we get now anyhow.

Hargrave is too old for the money he'll command. After last seasons "go young" on defensive movement, I don't see them making that move.

He's only a year older than Chris Jones and nobody has a problem extending him until he's 32 or 33. I don't see why it would be a problem with Hargrave on a 3-year deal.

IMO, going young on defense matters a lot more at LB and in the secondary than it does up front.

I wouldn't hate it, I just don't know that they can slot in that money on an outside FA that age with what they're gonna give Jones.

I'd rather look at giving it to a DE but that's just personal preference.

I like Armon Watts as a low-key guy that could be really solid. I have a feeling Veach will go after Jerry Tillery.

I think some of the top guys we're just not in the hunt for - Payne, Hargave and Tomlinson would all be great, but there's teams like the Bears with a need there and HUGE cap space. Maybe people can put me right, but it's surely not just how much cap space we have so much as how much compared to others? I get we'll have guys hopefully come here for less and a chance for a ring but still.

I think the guys we'll need to look at are a tier or two lower. Someone like Wormley does everything pretty well and shouldn't be too expensive. Or maybe Billings - pretty consistently decent against the run. Hicks would be useful if he could stay healthy, you'd have to think he's primed for a cheaper deal and a SB shot.

The other guy who intrigues me is Hurst. I don't think he'll leave SF but he has flashed ability as both a run stuffer and a pass-rusher, he's just never stayed healthy long enough to put both together. I would be very interested in seeing his value because there's a lot of talent there.
