Media Center>Older Movies That Are Forgotten
Holladay 03:16 AM 03-08-2025
Hate to say, in another thread about Peaky Blinders, Blacklist thread, both of which are a great series, but I get tired after a few views. Thus I needed a break.

So I surfed Netflix and found "Awakenings". One of the better Robin Williams obscure films. Not a fan of Robert De Niro, but a good flick from 1992.

I watched it a long time ago. Glad I found it again. I like historical films and a feel good or bad story.

Recommended.

What other hidden gems are out there...

We all have our preferences. This is a generic, not niche classic ala Rocky Horror Picture Show nor Monty Pythons stuff nor Casablanca.

Funny thing is, its not necessarily irrational to be fearful around inland fresh water

A giant catfish or huge snapping turtle can kill a grown man if they catch you off guard and mistake your shiny white foot or hand for a dying or lazy fish

Well shit. There goes my last lingering desire to swim in natural waters.

The best part - two weeks after seeing Jaws we went to fucking FLORIDA for the first time. When we went to the beach I wouldn't go out in the water deeper than my knees. Of course, I wasn't alone in that regard. There were plenty of adults doing the same thing. Most of them, actually. :-)

I was in the Navy, and I've been to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. And I can count on one hand the number of times I've swam in the ocean and have some fingers left over.

Just watched Overboard last night.

Kurt Russell is a gem. Just a fantastic actor, and funny as hell.

That's a good one. And I don't normally like kids in movies, but those little shits are hilarious.

Another forgotten Kurt Russell movie from the 80s that I absolutely love is The Best of Times. Robin Williams plays the loser who dropped what would have been the winning pass (from Russell) in the biggest game of his life, never got over it, and then sets out to rewrite history. Russell is a great straight man to Williams' lunacy.

Some other comedies from the 80s:

The Man With Two Brains. My second favorite Steve Martin movie after Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Over the top goofy and silly, plus a smoking hot young Kathleen Turner.

Ruthless People. One of my favorite comedies ever. If you like your laughs with a vicious edge to them, this movie is for you. Danny DeVito absolutely slays.

The Man With One Red Shoe. Forgotten early Tom Hanks movie that seemed to get bashed by everybody, including Hanks, but I thought it was great. Wonderful supporting cast, including Footloose's gorgeous Lori Singer and a scenery chewing Dabney Coleman as the bad guy.

Oh hell yeah Fraz. The part when they are eating dinner with their wives and Robin Williams rolls the Tv into sight is hilarious.

So many great moments. I loved the bit where Reno was about to throw the car keys to Jack, then stopped, grinned at him, then walked over and handed them to him instead. Twist that knife much? :-)

Russell is one of my all time faves. I love that Tarantino gave him a late career boost as well. He’s never bad in any role.

Yah. And a catfish will probably let go of your foot once it realizes it's not a fish. A snapping turtle don't give a shit.

When i was in HS my buddies invited me to go wrassling once; I know a posted about it years ago around here somewhere. Bottom line, when they told me they were going to tie a rope around me and the bumper of the truck "just in case" I decided i had a hair appt I'd forgotten about, lol.

Holly Palance. Jack's daughter.

Although personally I was partial to Pamela Reed, who played Reno's wife. She also played Belle Starr in Long Riders.

Used Cars was another great Kurt Russell movie. It's freaking hilarious.

Edit: It's on Tubi TV if you want some laughs.
