It’s time to worry about Soler. Not quite panic just yet but there’s reason to be concerned.

He had one monster season in 2019 when he hit 48HR. He was worth 3.6 Fwar. However in his other 1400 PA he’s been worth 2.2 combined. He provided +30.4 runs offensively in 2019 but only 0.9 in the rest of his career.

In his last 300 PA since 2019, he’s got a wRC+ of about 90. That’s lethal for a DH who can’t field or run. Looking under the hood his hard hit % is 36.5% vs 47% in 2019. All his other statcast data is the same (EV, contact rate, swing rate, chase rate). But he’s pulling the ball 57% vs career of 46%.

I wonder if he’s having trouble now turning 29, catching up to heat. So he’s cheating a bit and becoming a dead pull hitter. Pitchers aren’t leaving balls out over the outside edge where he can plow into them, they’re likely pitching him well inside with heat and letting him get himself out.

The Royals have the worst defensive infield in baseball

Could the defensive statistics be wrong? Potentially! But two factors work against the Royals here. First, as stated earlier, this approach incorporates both DRS and UZR, thereby tempering some of the extremes in either direction. Second, the Royals aren’t just middling here—they are the worst defensive infield in baseball. The Royals are so bad that you could spot them 10 whole runs per 1000 innings here and they would be...the second-worst defensive infield in baseball.

Angel Hernandez admitted that he just guessed yesterday. How does this guy still have an MLB job?

"I was trying to read the players to see what they did with the ball, and I had to come out with the call. I basically guessed on the wrong call,” Angel Hernandez said https://t.co/po43quN2KF

Yeah, they've been awful. I'm shocked how bad Merrifield has looked this season.

On a non-Royals related note............Willie Mays turns 90 tomorrow!

90...........that just doesn't seem possible. I am old enough to remember Mickey, Willie and the Duke roaming centerfield in the Yankee Stadium, The Polo Grounds, and Ebbets Field.

Willie Mays........"The Say Hey Kid". One of the greatest to ever play the game. I just cannot fathom that today he is 90 years old. Willie Mays in one of those guys whom will be forever young in my mind. He was a truly remarkable player in baseball's Golden Age. One of the most important players in baseball history. And I remember him vividly from my youth.

Happy Birthday to the great Willie Mays!!! And may he have many more.

If he doesn't get it together by July, move Santana to DH. Remember what happened the last time the Royals had a switch hitting DH? World Series Champions Baby!!

Dozier to 1st, Witt Jr to 3rd.

Yeah I'm not sure what Whit's deal is. He's been fine until this year. Maybe it's just sample size but I'm not sure what he's doing out there. Lopez has trended down as well and Dozier is just a below avg 3B defensively, which I can actually live with.

Your post made me look up his splits. Career:

1st half: 98 wRC+
2nd half: 138 wRC+

Looks like we just need to wait on him.

Not surprising. It passes the eye test with the infielders goofing a lot of grounders and balls sailing.

FFS, when we aren't swinging at balls out of the zone, the fucking Ump is calling them strikes...

That was a terrible AB Salvy....

Bring him back home to KC!!!!

The Los Angeles Angels are releasing future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols today, per sources. Pujols is in the final year of his 10-year, $253 million contract.
