I saw this topic on another message board and thought it would be fun to share some little known restaurants in Chiefs Country. I realize some of you never stop to eat when traveling since road kill is plentiful, but if you do please share.
The mini-hamburgers similar to White Castle have so much onion cooked in them that anyone from the area knows when you visit as the smell of your clothes will give you away. Story is the restaurant decided to get a new grill. Customers complained that the hamburgers were not as good cooked on the new grill, since the grill wasn't seasoned as well. So the owners went out to the landfill and recovered the original grill. If you cannot make through Kansas, you at least want to read some the stories.
The only BBQ joint that I prefer the pulled pork over brisket, because their unique BBQ sauce goes with pork so well. If nothing else, buy their sauce online, and purchase some pulled pork at a local eatery and serve with Roy's sauce.
Never been to Philly, but imagine these Philly Cheese Sandwiches are as good. Never tried the hamburger, but the photos look great.

Toots in Howard Kansas is a good spot. Walk up or dine in. On Wednesdays they use to sell 1$ deluxe burgers. I would buy a bag for the house when I’d visit the gun and ammo dealer in town.
Whenever I do volunteer work at Harvester's, you can bet that I'm having lunch at Hi-Boy's or Dixon's off 40 Hwy. Not sure if those qualify as dives, but the food is much better than the outside of the building would suggest, and they've been around for ages.
I agree with the styrofoam cup qualifier as an indicator of a 'dive'. I would also like to submit the humble plastic tumbler, in either red or amber color: [Reply]
How do you know thats his hand? Could be his wife's for all we know.
Anyway, there is a place in Joplin that has chili spaghetti. Red's maybe? Can't remember for sure, its been a long time. But that place was pretty good, that I remember anyway. [Reply]

Hi Boy on 40 has been closed for about two months. Not sure why. Might be staffing issues. [Reply]

Maid Rite makes "loose meat" hamburgers. All Maid Rites do that. So does Mugs Up in Independence. It's called a "ZipBurger." If you've never had one, its probably not what you expected.
Dive drive in food isn't for everyone. Different strokes for different folks.

Marty’s Deli was torn down around 10 years ago. Used to install cable in the apartments in back there. Always sketchy in those upstairs apartments. Lol.
My grandparents owned a maid-rite in Trenton, Mo 30 years ago (or so). Man I loved traveling up there and watching gramps cook. Granny made homemade pies everyday. Nothing beats those, I’ll fight you!!! Wish I had her recipes. I can make a mean Maid-Rite still to this day!!! [Reply]

I love Mugs Up. I don't understand the fascination with White Castle. I always thought those sliders smelled like Alpo drenched in onions. Not in my gastric wheel house, but I know some people drive hundreds of miles to get a sack full. Again, different strokes...

Fred and Reds closed for a few years but was revived under new ownership. Can't speak on if it has changed beyond that. [Reply]
