I saw this topic on another message board and thought it would be fun to share some little known restaurants in Chiefs Country. I realize some of you never stop to eat when traveling since road kill is plentiful, but if you do please share.
The mini-hamburgers similar to White Castle have so much onion cooked in them that anyone from the area knows when you visit as the smell of your clothes will give you away. Story is the restaurant decided to get a new grill. Customers complained that the hamburgers were not as good cooked on the new grill, since the grill wasn't seasoned as well. So the owners went out to the landfill and recovered the original grill. If you cannot make through Kansas, you at least want to read some the stories.
The only BBQ joint that I prefer the pulled pork over brisket, because their unique BBQ sauce goes with pork so well. If nothing else, buy their sauce online, and purchase some pulled pork at a local eatery and serve with Roy's sauce.
Never been to Philly, but imagine these Philly Cheese Sandwiches are as good. Never tried the hamburger, but the photos look great.
CatinKS is online now Report Post [Reply]
I used to live across the street from there in Eastwood Lake. It used to be a Dairy Queen. They ran some special one time with $1 Double Cheese Burgers. I think they fucked it up because even then that's too cheap.
For my time, the dive in Emporia was J's Carryout. I don't know what it is now, but my fucking Christ it was goddamned good then. And they were so nice, and free ice cream cone if you ate in at one of their like 8 chairs.
I had strike duty in Salina several years ago. We were in the building 14-16 hours a day. After about 2 weeks of the same food from the same place, we were about ready to mutiny. The roaving glad hander brought in 8 dozen Cozy burgers. I'll bet that palce still smells of onions. When we lived in Topeka, Bobo's was a couple miles from my house. The carhops wore skates. [Reply]

I thought it would be insightful to share these off the path "Dives" with others. When traveling, google maps doesn't list "Dives" separate from restaurants. Next time I post on a public message board, will check in with you before posting....Oh darn, maybe I should have contacted you before posting this?
One more dive to the list For those out of town it is convenient as there are several motels within a few blocks that you can rent a room by the hour. Save you $$$ if you are a light sleeper. :-)

Just really good food and you might get to see an ankle of one of the young cute waitresses.
Carriage House at Carriage Crossing, it’s still good. [Reply]
