Chiefs stock watch: RB Isiah Pacheco impressing; WR Josh Gordon struggling

By Nate Taylor
Aug 7, 2022

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — At this point, the Chiefs have fewer than 10 practices left of their training camp.

Such a realization was felt throughout the team the past two days, as the fully padded practices were long and the repetitions for the second- and third-team members started to decrease. On Saturday, the Chiefs will play their first preseason game, an exhibition on the road against the Chicago Bears.

With this past Saturday’s practice serving as the midway point of camp, here’s an updated assessment of the players who have stood out and those who are on the wrong end of a position battle — or even in danger of not earning a spot on the initial 53-man roster — as the Chiefs move closer to Aug. 30, the NFL’s cutdown day.

Spoiler!

Hell, even if he can't make it at RT, keep him at G. Players get hurt and backups are always needed. It's not a total loss - remember he's only a 5th rounder.

Couldn't a practice squad guy with potential beat Gordon's 32 receiving yards last season?

Humphrey and Smith aren't tackles.

It's just really REALLY hard to find guys that big who can move well enough. And when you find 'em, they go early. If they don't, it's because there are technique issues that need to be figured out.

And Humphrey was a 2nd round pick, fellas. Smith was considered a 2nd round talent who fell to the 5th because of a genuine medical issue.

Kinnard was by all accounts healthy - he just wasn't getting picked in the first couple of days. That means something. I still REALLY like the pick, but there's gonna need to be development there. And he's never going to be a premium athlete out there so if you're lucky he becomes a poor mans Orlando Brown Jr. That's just the way it goes, lads.

freaking chris jones lined up in the backfield for a single short yardage play could theoretically go on a quick route and ramble for 32 yards.

Tackles and DE's go early. It's just tough to find them late and I have a theory on why.

What they do is based so much on their athletic ability, which we've gotten pretty good at testing and being able to see. You've gotta meet an absolute baseline of ability to play those spots and we know how to look for them.

May be a practice squad guy that would not get poached unless a team needed a guard.
Tech and foot work can be taught, not worried.

So they're women? Or more accurately, it's the hunt for girlfriend/wife material.

Some of them walk in the bar with long legs and a great rack. Others are dumpy fat shits. You can easily cull the dumpy fat shits from the stack and focus on the legs and rack. Sooner or later some of those will turn out to be vapid twats even if they're hot and you move along - but the fastest, easiest dividing line is still going to be the eye test.

And hey, if you're not the best looking dude with the fattest wallet picking high in the round and you can't get one of those 9s or 10s, you can still find yourself a cute girl and either A) Get her in the gym (NFL strength and conditioning program) or B) get her some bolt on's (Coach 'em up - fix that faulty technique).

Whichever route you go depends a little on the draft board, really. And...uh...what offense you're looking to run?

This one might be falling apart on me here.

I'm not sure why Chief Fan thought he would start at RT as as rookie (and he certainly wasn't going to start at LT in place of Brown). It never made sense.

Of course, some Chief Fans were also suggesting we let OBJ walk THIS season.

I'm more mad at myself for going in there in the first place.

I think you could squint and see some Jeff Allen potential there? Because when Allen played RT for us, his only real skill was being broad. It just took some time to get around the dude because he was big.

And for a period of time he was pretty damn effective at it. Moreover, he was just damn good in college. So you hope maybe he could muddle his way through. Stranger things have happened (again, Larry Borom being damn effective for the Bears last year).

But this ain't those 2013-2015 Chiefs. They just need more athleticism at T than those squads did. Or they need someone who has his technique down well enough to make up for it rather than just maul away outside.

Still a good pick, though.

There's always escort services aka free agency too.

I was kind of surprised they didn't really look at T in the free agent time. But they've got some options.

I kinda like Wylie out there. He ain't great, but he works.
