Yeah friends - that's what we here in the industry call 'actual malice' and it's...not great.

The Athletic ain't in great shape financially (and some beat reporter isn't gonna line anyone's pockets) so they'd better hope they have damn good insurance. But I'll note that many insurance policies won't cover the sorts of damages being alleged here. They don't cover 'overt acts' or gross/reckless misconduct. It's why punitive damages awards can be so destructive; very few professional liability policies I've seen will cover them.

They'll cover the cost of the defense that hopes to avoid them, but once they're awarded you're in trouble.

I suspect The Athletic will attempt to lean into lost wages as an award if possible rather than punitives because those would be a sort of actual damages award that their policy is more likely to cover.

Because those boys don't have $40 million lying around.

The Dodgers kept Urias after the first incident and cut him after this last one.

No, plenty of his teammates absolutely detest the guy. He has a history of bullying random people using his Twitter followers. This isn't a perception thing. He has rubbed endless people the wrong way throughout his career.

My first thought after watching his video was why in the world did MLB go along with this punishment, etc if it were all so obvious. And that's why I'd be extremely reluctant to take the version of events he just put out into the world at face value.

Neither one of them look good here. He posted a video showing screenshots and a video. He said there's metadata but he didn't post it. He complained that everyone took her at face value but now he's expecting the same thing.

And yeah...it's well known in the Dodgers clubhouse that a lot of the players didn't like this guy.

Well Molly Knight's about to find out how that approach works...

Urias still hasn’t been formally cut by the Dodgers, right?

At any rate, Bauer for whatever reason didn’t get that second chance.

Eh - looks like they actually settled all that stuff in June.

Seems like they'll escape anything too substantial.

He's been removed from the clubhouse and scrubbed from the stadium. I don't know if the cut has officially happened but he isn't coming back. And fans, rightfully, don't want him too.

Pending FA and he was placed on the commissioners exempt list.

There wasn't really anyone to cut at that point. On the commissioners list he becomes a non-entity for roster purposes and now he's just a free agent (that nobody is going to touch this off-season).

Urias likely had a $100 million outburst. I'm not sure, with multiple documented DV incidents, he'll ever pitch in the big leagues again. There's always a bit of a "yeah, but he did it with the Dodgers and their fairy dust" element to Dodger free agent SPs. Combine that with a relatively soft platform season for him and ultimately his age won't matter.

He was going to be probably the top FA starting pitcher on the market with Ohtani down. That's pretty much a guaranteed 4 year, $100 million deal especially with as young as he is.

And he flushed it.

And it's not like he did it in the privacy of his own home. Dude did it outside the stadium...reportedly with people filming it.

And that's evidently the SECOND time he's done that in full view of teammates/celebrities.

I mean fuck me, what's the guy do behind closed doors?

The weird thing is that Bauer was treated as the most rotten piece of subhuman shit to walk the earth while Urias just...disappeared. The Dodgers had no problem vilifying Bauer but they just quietly non-personed Urias.

I have some thoughts on that but I don't suppose this is the right board for those comments...

Bauer got that treatment because the commissioner hates him, the chance to nail him to the wall was taken as soon as it could be. On top of that no one one on the Dodgers defended him, you had players saying they didn't want him back.

It went to "oh well people that know this guy don't like him so it fits"

Yea basically Bauer agreed that she would delete all of her tweets regarding him, her or the Athletic wouldn't talk about him and would purge all of that stuff..

She's also no longer an Athletic employee.
