The Neteyam funeral and spirit scene with Jake remembering teaching the boy how to hunt fish really hit me hard.
I think that's the closest I've come to crying without actually crying. My girlfriend was one step away from full-on ugly crying so I was struggling to hold my shit in.
I think it was a combination of many factors, though. They didn't give Neteyam much in the way of characterization , but he was a good person and great son and it's made worse by the fact that he died a young teen. Seeing his body reclaimed by the Spirit Tree and Jake remembering his birth, the fishing scene and Neteyam seemingly being unaware that he's dead were all beautiful but haunting. "Why are you crying?" "I'm just happy to see you" "Well, I'm happy to see you, too".
The movie was basic as all hell but that scene was very powerful, IMO.
I cried like three times both times I watched. Could I have held back? For sure. But why do that? Let the emotions wash over you. [Reply]

Oh, they did. I'm just not much of an actual crier, to be honest.
Spoiler!
The movie was definitely very sad at various points. For me, it was tough watching the whale hunting scenes in general, specifically the mother and her calf. It was a very on-the-nose allusion to modern day whale hunting, which makes it a little more real and hard to digest.
Neteyam dying, saying he wanted to go home, not getting to get out his last words to his dad, and Neytiri screaming over his corpse was sad as well.
There was just something about that final funeral scene that really moved me, though. I think it was a combination of the things I mentioned: the circumstance of his death and Neytiri's singing with the kicker being the memories of his life. Seeing anything emotional tied to kids or animals is the quickest way to gut punch me.
