Buried deep within the massive infrastructure legislation recently signed by President Joe Biden is a little-noticed “safety” measure that will take effect in five years. Marketed to Congress as a benign tool to help prevent drunk driving, the measure will mandate that automobile manufacturers build into every car what amounts to a “vehicle kill switch.”...
The lack of ultimate control over one’s vehicle presents numerous and extremely serious safety issues; issues that should have been obvious to Members of Congress before they voted on the measure...
Adding what amounts to a mandatory, backdoor government “kill switch” to cars is not only a violation of our constitutional rights, but an affront to what is — or used to be — an essential element of our national character. Unless this regulatory mandate is not quickly removed or defanged by way of an appropriations rider preventing its implementation, the freedom of the open road that individual car ownership brought to the American Dream, will be but another vague memory of an era no longer to be enjoyed by future generations.

Now tell me about how only the cops should be armed.....Not reasonable for regular everyday citizens to own guns, they might hurt someone. [Reply]

You clowns on the left didn't put that in your rotten, abusive, pork written, farcical, "infrastructure" bill. You put in what is being discussed in this thread.
So no....the problem isn't solved....its just begun. [Reply]

Defund the police is a patently leftist (Democrat) policy. You know the party you vote for every election. Surely you know this since you vote democrat, would be pretty bad look if you weren't aware of what your party supports. [Reply]
I don’t even know where this angle of cops using the kill switch to disable cars is coming from, it’s not even present in the Daily Caller article. The kill switch idea being proposed will be activated by the vehicle being driven, not a cop(well, ideally not a cop, the hacking worries are still valid). Analogues to spike strips and PIT maneuvers and service weapons(?) are thus not applicable and frankly nonsensical.
Nevermind the fact that spike strips and PIT maneuvers are applied to a very small fraction of drivers over their lives, people that are most likely already in the wrong(how many times are these used on completely innocent people not running from police?), while this kill switch will be mandatory in all new cars after a certain point, whether the person operating the vehicle is in the wrong or not. Seems apples and oranges. [Reply]

Are you saying that cops will use this device to rape young women?
Or are you saying that the device will just be available to the general public, including rapists?
Why are you hung up on cops?
The LEO or back door feature is only one piece of the tech. It'll also monitor the driver for intoxication, drowsiness, drug use, unusual behavior, I assume texting, unusual driving habits, etc. We already have limp mode as a time constraint. We already have cars that attempt to keep you from causing a crash. It's just the next step.
While we'd all get to laugh at all the asians sitting on the side of the road in deactivated cars for shitty driving, there should be some serious concerns about allowing limp mode or deactivation based on the driver's actions.
As for the back door, nearly every vehicle is reverse engineered fairly quickly in today's world. I have very very little confidence that the back door could be kept secure. It's a very dumb idea on it's own, but seemed to be fairly well covered already. [Reply]

I don't support the larger "infrastructure" bill, so I obviously had no hand in writing it. [Reply]

A friend of mine had new Escalade with all the bells and whistles and it had the sensors that activated brakes and steering if it detected you leaving your lane or getting close to someone. In cruise control on the highway it would automatically pass cars etc...
He said it was going off all the time shaking the seat and putting on the brakes. He had to disable all of it because it made it complete shit to drive.
Sounds like something we would all want in our vehicles. [Reply]

Is President Biden in favor of "Defund the Police"? [Reply]
