MLB moving All-Star Game from Atlanta over Georgia voting law

Major League Baseball is moving the 2021 All-Star Game and 2021 draft out of Atlanta in response to a new Georgia voting law that critics say unfairly limits access to the ballot box, especially for people of color.

"Over the last week, we have engaged in thoughtful conversations with Clubs, former and current players, the Players Association, and The Players Alliance, among others, to listen to their views," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "I have decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this year's All-Star Game and MLB Draft."

The decision follows calls from as the White House to consider moving the midsummer classic out of Atlanta.

In his statement, Manfred said MLB "fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box." Manfred said MLB would continue to celebrate the memory of Hank Aaron, who died in January, during the All-Star festivities.

No new site for the All-Star Game or draft were announced.

Seems like the rules should be the same for everyone. I do not see how they expanded
The counties don't have the same rules. They flexed Sunday as optional which can be used as a tool by county officials to reduce "souls to the polls" black voting. They flexed polling hours with 5pm close being the standard - an easy way to limit the metro vote, many of which would prefer to early vote before or after the work day. So the areas that traditionally have the biggest issue with lines and access are seeing restrictions, while rural counties see expansions.

If rural early voting was a major obstacle to participation that would be one thing. Metros do. So this all just a ruse to claim early voting is expanding when it actually is not where it matters most. And it matters way more because the absentee ballot restrictions are going to create a ton more chaos at poll sites that traditionally struggle with lines.

Everyone should have the same access. Regardless of where they live. If you can vote on Monday at 3 in one area you should be able to in every area.

Your saying the Sunday flex will be used as a tool by county officials to reduce black voting. That is stupid. Do you know who the county official are in those counties making those decisions? hint they are not white Republicans. So the Black County officials will decide not to have voting open on Sunday? Personally I think the law should have mandated the same hours. But I can see some Counties not wanting to pay the over time in keeping the polling open longer. The practical implications are those in the cities will have more hours and time to vote then those in the rural areas. But want to complain that it is not a total free for all.

If you have one area struggling with lines and access, and another with no complaints, that's an easy call. Of course the early voting should prioritize areas that need the most help. Especially if you're implementing voter restrictions that are going to put way more strain on in person voting. Voting in Fulton County is going to be a nightmare and that feels very deliberate.

That's ironic as many feel that people over the age of 70 shouldnt be able to vote...or to drive. Dementia setting in and all with the boomer generation.
