Back in the day when I was in my 20's I'd often show up at the local DD at around 3 to sober up before making the long (3.5 mile drive) home.

Ecton (yes, that was his name) would start making them then and by 2 cups of coffee I had the most fresh doughnuts ever. It was awesome.

I didn't care for DD the first time they came around in the 70s and 80s in KC we had Winchells and that was a much better donut. Winchells made a excellent bearclaw and apple fritter. I dont know what happened to Winchells and for that matter the bearclaw you just dont see it in donut shops any more.
