Nzoner's Game Room>Orlando Brown Projected Contract 6 year $145 mil
dlphg9 08:17 PM 03-28-2022
So there's an article on NFL network saying that Orlando Brown is expected to sign for 6 years $145 mil.

That comes to $24.16 mil/yr and makes him the highest paid offensive lineman in football. It also would give him the 19th highest salary per year in the NFL

How would you feel if that is the contract he ended up signing?

I'm fine with it. He is a top 5 LT and he's only 26 next season. A young great LT is a guy you can't let leave.

If Brown plays on the Tag this year and just duplicates his 2021 season, he'll just want a bigger contract next year so we will be in the same boat next year. He and his agent won't be any easier to deal with either. It's like some of you guys went to the Carl Peterson School for GMs.

Yeah but with wide receivers it's not like Christian Kirk received a Tyreek Hill money, so there's still a difference in salary between good and elite. Meanwhile with Orlando, he wants to get paid like Trent Williams (according to this article which we don't know if it's true or not). That just can't happen.

Yeah, but who is the Christian Kirk equivalent at LT that some needy team is going to way overpay for and screw up the entire market and blow up our plans for LT?

I know it's not just that simple, but there are a ton of factors to consider here with Brown.

Trent Williams got like 55 guaranteed and Bakhtiari got 63....

That’s not how it works. Christian Kirk has never had 1,000 receiving yards or been to a pro bowl or all-pro and he’s getting $21.5 million per. DeShaun Watson’s contract is absolutely insane and he’s not an elite QB.

Good players cost a lot of money. I’m not comfortable taking that risk of going another route with our most prized asset of our football lives entering his prime when a solid young LT is there.

This won’t even hurt our team. Frank Clark and Chris Jones will be off the books by the time Brown his contract kicks in. Probably Joe Thuney too.

It only blows up your plans for an LT if your plan is to go and sign another free agent LT. If your plan is to draft one, who cares?

If he’s not worth what he’s asking this year he won’t next either. Then you walk away, a massive over pay is bad business.

That young solid LT forced him to change now he plays because if not, he'd get him killed. So I'm not going too high on the whole "you need him to protect Mahomes!" narrative. He's decent but not great or irreplaceable when it comes to pass protection.

There is no reality that I can envision where Veach massively overpays for any player. If he didn't for Mahomes, why would he do that for any player?

In Veach we trust.

It’s already been pointed out that Christian Darrisaw is the only LT anywhere near the range for us the last 5 drafts.

So your plan is to trade Brown Jr and then do a Patrick Mahomes like trade up of multiple 1st rd picks (probably more) to move into the top 10-15 range for a LT?

NFL contracts are inflationary year over year so it's not going to get any cheaper unless we can draft a starting LT in the last 4 to 5 picks of the first round of the 2023 draft. What looks like an over pay now won't be a year from now. Solidify the O line.

He’s not irreplaceable and no one on the team outside of Mahomes is. The chance you take with Brown is you have to be absolutely sure in advance, and not hindsight you can get a better LT in the draft than him. If you tag him and he improves this year, his cost will only go up.

It forced Mahomes to change his style of play by not drifting too deep in the pocket and stepping up

I’m not sure why that’s a bad thing?

Trading away a Pro Bowl LT whom we gave up a 1st and a 3rd for just one year ago... and replacing him by drawing one from the deck of LTs that will be available at the end of the 1st round or later rounds in the draft... is too dumb to even debate.

The way to stay on top of the league is clear. You pay young players in their prime at premium positions. Aging players or those at non-premium positions who want massive contracts are expendable. QBs, LTs, and pass rushers are not.

Yep, and they are 31 and 33 years of age. If we pay $19-20 mill a year, despite what the contract says, I'm good. If we franchise him, it's just going to get worse next year.
