1. The Chiefs go on to have a good, quality season and will be drafting somewhere between 30 and 32. HC Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach are retained for the coming season.
2. The Chiefs trade WR Skyy Moore and a 2025 conditional pick to the Denver Broncos for WR Jerry Jeudy, whom they then extend 3 years, $20m.
3. The Chiefs cut WR Marquez Valdez-Scantling, OT Lucas Niang.
4. The Chiefs extend S Justin Reid 2 years, $22m.
5. The Chiefs re-sign OT Donovan Smith 2 years, $18m; DE Mike Danna for 3 years, $30m; LB Willie Gay Jr. 2 years, $17m.
6. The Chiefs bring back the following players on minimal deals: WR Mecole Hardman, TE Jody Fortson, OG Nick Allegretti, LB Jack Cochrane, DT Matt Dickerson, CB Nazeeh Johnson, S Mike Edwards, LS James Winchester
7. The Chiefs let walk: QB Blaine Gabbert, RB Jerrick McKinnon, RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, WR Richie James, TE Blake Bell, OT Prince Tega Wanogho, OG Mike Caliendo, DT Chris Jones, DT Derrick Nnadi, DT Tershawn Wharton, DE Malik Herring, LB Dru Tranquill, CB L'Jarius Sneed, P Tommy Townsend
8. The Chiefs sign the following free agents: RB Antonio Gibson (Commanders), DT Fletcher Cox (Eagles), CB Sean Murphy-Bunting (Titans)
9. The Chiefs's conditional 7th rounder they traded to the Texans for CB Lonnie Johnson, Jr. in 2022 doesn't activate.
Clearly the biggest problem with the Chiefs WR corps right now is that it lacks a dynamic Z-type receiver. Hardman is the best they have, and he returns to the team on a small deal.
So they draft Xavier Worthy, a hyper-explosive speed machine who is finally a WR capable of running Wasp-type routes.
The team has some massive holes to plug immediately at OT, DT, and RB. The Chiefs elect to extend Donovan Smith for a couple years, but he remains very cuttable in 2025 if they find a rookie in the draft they love.
They sign Fletcher Cox, who is about out of a job now that Jalen Carter is amazing. Cox provides some of the juice the team lacks with Chris Jones leaving, and a ton of the leadership in the room as well. The team gets Tyler Davis out of Clemson as another penetrating tackle, and just rolls with Neil Ferrell as their lone 1-tech. The team brings back Mike Danna on a three year deal to keep the DE rotation fresh and flexible.
I love the addition of Sean Murphy-Bunting, especially if Sneed walks out the door. A tall, sticky corner with long speed, he had a hell of a run in the 2020 Super Bowl run with Tampa. I like Nic Jones and Nazeeh Johnson rounding out the CB room, so no draft picks for the secondary.
An underrated move that will probably happen is the Chiefs will need to make an investment along the interior line to begin starting soon once Trey Smith walks out the door (I am betting currently the Chiefs keep Humphrey over him), and since I couldn't find a slam dunk pick on the 1st and 2nd day of the draft, I opt instead for Javion Cohen, a heady player who will assimilate quickly in pass protection. Agree with others here, CJ too good to let walk. He and Omenihu are going to become the powerhouse duo we've been dreaming of for years, can't break that up. If we're not signing CJ in the above scenario we'd be salary cap rich, why not keep Gay and Sneed.
I like the Worthy pick! Wasn't Davis supposed to be in the draft last year? Rd 3 is pretty high for a RB but I'd be excited if we brought one in that high. [Reply]
Damn, that is gutting a team without seeing the REST of this season and the POST playoffs. Not sure about letting CJ walk without SEEING what the rest of the season has in store for us this EARLY in the season. The dynamics could change very quickly at THIS point in the season. Let's just see what happens before we start cutting bait. [Reply]

I don't see them just moving on from him.

a. It's going to gut their depth if they do that.
b. They've proven that they are not comfortable handing out mega-contracts and will let an All Planet player walk to keep their cap clean.
c. Brett Veach haaaaaaaaaates paying for past production. I mean he hates it. And Jones is fantastic, but his play the last three years is probably going to be better than his play for 2024-2027, and yet he wants to be paid more than he's been paid for the past three years.
d. The Chiefs have tried to get a deal done with Jones for a full calendar year now, and they can't square the circle. [Reply]

That's why I really like the concept of extending Donovan Smith. Smith is not a world beater, but he's really solid. So I think you can sign him to a "really solid" contract for a couple of years.
Doing that frees you up in the draft to do just about anything you want, rather than anchoring you to Best Tackle Available. And I like the idea of Z-receiver/3-tech/bellcow RB in some kind of order. [Reply]

That's fair, but that's kinda what we do here. [Reply]
I'd be remiss if I didn't say I absolutely despise the idea taking Clemson defensive linemen. And if that's what we're doing to pair with a 34-year-old Fletcher Cox to address the newly-created gaping holes at DT then I'd be more than a bit concerned.
Maybe Davis works out but I don't like it on the surface.
I don't particularly dislike any of it otherwise, though I'm a bit conflicted on extending Reid or re-signing Gay and feel like maybe you could put Chenal in Gay's spot and Conner in Reid's and keep filling the pipeline, which is where using that 3rd on a LB or S might be better than using it on a RB that will not start.
