Kalich began his college career at Blinn College, a junior college in Texas. After a year in Blinn’s rotation, he transferred to Texas A&M and moved into the Aggies’ bullpen. The recipient of the program’s Wally Moon Award for most improved player, he served as the team’s closer, saving 12 games. The Braves took the right-handed reliever in the fourth round of the 2019 Draft and signed him for $100,000 below slot then watched him pitch well in Class A Rome during his pro debut. A broken wrist suffered before Spring Training a year ago kept him from pitching in 2020, but he now has a clean bill of health.

The 6-foot-3 Kalich fits the future reliever profile well, with a pair of solid power pitches at his disposal. It starts with his mid-90s fastball, a pitch he can crank up a bit harder at times, touching the upper 90s. He backs that up with a slider with cutter-like action to it that can be an above-average swing-and-miss pitch for him.

Kalich missed a lot of bats, both at A&M (13.5 K/9 rate) and during his pro debut (10 K/9), but he’s going to have to prove he can find the strike zone more consistently as he moves up the ladder after walking 4.6 per nine with the Braves in 2019. He doesn’t have to have pinpoint command, and he was a better strike-thrower with the Aggies, so if he can get back to that, he has the chance to move quickly and impact a big league bullpen in short relief.

A completely reasonable return for two months of a bench bat. Importantly, Kalich is a 2019 draftee, so he won't be Rule 5-eligible this winter, an important consideration given how many prospects will need to be added this year. https://t.co/WgreowLp2c

Yep and it's always all the know it all Barkalounger wannabe GM's with all the answers. The GM can do so much the new owner can veto also. You never know whats going on in the background but in the end the GM takes the heat then on down the chain.

But I suggest you mail in some applications. Barkalounger GM's are always in high demand.

This argument is so tired, close up all forums, close up reddit and Facebook sports discussion, no questioning of the great and powerful.

I like that we got someone for Soler.

Also, Dayton makes trades literally all the time. Beni is one that comes to mind, and he wheeled and dealed in 2015 and 2017 (one worked, one did not). Holding in 2016 backfired spectacularly but it was rumored that he was working on deals for Wade and Cain before they got injured. That year comes to mind as a lost one in terms of the long term impact that could have had on the franchise.

But, it's going to be so frustrating if he sits on Whit this season and Whit declines next year. Feels like this was the perfect time to move him.

I was thinking about that 2016 trade deadline earlier today...

because Trea Turner was one of the names involved in discussions then, as was Victor Robles.

Look, the Royals should be trading as much as they can. I'd like to see them be more "transactional" to borrow a phrase Dayton Moore recently was using.

Scott Barlow
Whit Merrifield

should both be guys they're actively talking about.
