Media Center>Video Card chat
Mephistopheles Janx 03:06 PM 11-06-2020
I just picked up a new monitor (34" Ultra Wide 1440p 144MHz 1500R Curve Samsung Panel -VA) to replace my 3 monitor setup (24" ASUS 1080p). Now I need a new video card to drive the monitor.

My current rig is:

Intel Core i-7 4770k Processor
32GB DDR3 Memory
Gigabyte Z97MX-Gaming 5 Motherboard
Radeon RX 570 Video Card

This card is going to struggle to push anything more than low to medium graphics on games with this new monitor. Where I'm torn is the cost of new video cards.

If I'm looking hard enough, I can stumble across an open box 5600 for $200 or $230 new. A 5700 for $320 (open box) or $350 new. But at that point... why would I just not drop another $100 for the 6700 at $449?

Ultimately... that makes the 5700 a non player and I'm left choosing between a 5600 at $230 or a 6700 at $450. I'd rather not spend an extra $220 but I feel like the 6700 would probably be the last video card my current build sees.

Then what about the 20x series by nVidia? By paying a touch more I get Ray Tracing which is cool but I'm not paying for a 2080, for what I would pay for a 2070 I may as well snag one of the new AMD cards. A 2060 is going for $320 new... I don't know that Ray Tracing is worth nearly $100.

Better yet... do any of you fellow nerds have an itch to update and want to sell me their 5k/20x series cards?

Maybe this is a better question... I have about $650 in Amazon gift cards... what is the best card you would/could buy at that price point. I would also be willing to add a little to that if it was worth it.
4070 Ti without a damn question.

Where are you getting a 4070 ti for $650? 4070 ti is a failed 4080 that was overpriced and underperformed so they changed the name to 4070 ti and took a hundred dollars off and acted like it was value, and its still $800 minimum....

Is the card I'm keeping my eye on. I just dont see the value in Nvidia right now unless you really really really want the best ray tracing you can possibly get.

I would maybe consider this but my monitors are gsync which is not compatable with freesync or so I am told. I am not looking to upgrade my monitors at this point but down the road possibly. Just too much of an expense for both right now.

An AMD card will work just fine with a G-sync monitor. If it's a true G-sync monitor and not just a "G-sync compatible" monitor, you just lose out on variable refresh rate. If you care about that then I guess Nvidia is your only option, but do you?

Kind of the whole point of having gsync.

Sure, but the most common version of "G-snyc" is compatible with AMD cards. Even newer true G-sync monitors are compatible for a few years now.

My monitors are probably 5+ years old so I suspect they won't be compatible with any Freesync only cards. I am probably going to stick with Nvidia. Eventually i will upgrade my monitors and won't have to worry about it in the future but for right now... ehhh.

What is the model number of your monitor?

Well then, I personally would look into a used card if you can get a decent price on it. Nvidia is in a fucked up spot right now where their 4000 series cards arent selling, but the 3000 series cards still are so their price is now going back up. Used 3070 ti's are selling on ebay in the $400-500 range.

He said he would be willing to add a little.

And it doesn't matter what it was labeled originally. All that matters is the performance. I bought my 2080 for basically $800 when it first came out. The 4070ti is MASSIVE upgrade at the same price point.

Not sure why you're so outraged.

6080 XT is trash. Do not buy that.

You want to be able to have ray tracing on. 4070 Ti with DLSS 3 and frame gen at $800 is the way to go, my guy. It will make your Gsync monitor purr at 1440p.

No one is outraged. The 40 series Nvidia cards are dogshit value. Every single one of them is like $200 overpriced. Even the last gen 30 series models are still overpriced and going up in price because the 40 series is selling at like a 20 year low for Nvidia.

You think the 6800 XT is trash. A card that trades blows with a 3080 is trash... for $500-550 dollars in todays market... trash...

If you want raytracing and absolutely need Nvidia to pair with your monitor, then ya, sure, go get Nvidia. That's like 10% of the gaming market.

Trading blows. That's cute. Yeah, it trades blows with ray tracing off.

If you don't want RT capabilities in your one major upgrade in like 7 years, you're conceding that you're upgrading into a dying breed of GPUs.

The 10% of the market argument is so dumb. People couldn't afford cell phones at one point too and that was 10% of the market. RT is the future. DLSS, XeSS, FSR is the future. Frame gen is the future.

You're telling BigRichard to drop $550 into a good raster card after 7 years of no upgrades vs me telling him to spend $250 more and be set for the next 7 years as DLSS and frame gen evolve AND have better raster capabilities (it's not like you're compromising on triangles with the 4070Ti).

Do I wish the card was $200 cheaper? Of course. But I wouldn't spend $550 or whatever into just good rasterization.

I had a couple of extra laptops and a decent tower setup that I was planning on getting rid of anyways so I am getting them all reset and going to sell them for a little extra cash. I went ahead and got the 4070 TI... this one specifically https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I didn't want to spend that much and actually looked at the 3070 TI after the 4070 TI was mentioned but the benchmarks between the two I couldn't pass up the 4070 TI for $200 more dollars.
