Houston high school runner Matthew Boling breaks national record in 100-meter dash

Houston high school sprinter Matthew Boling has garnered immense national attention on the track in recent months.

On Saturday, the 18-year-old took that to a new level.

Boling ran the 100-meter dash at the Texas UIL state track and field championships at the University of Texas in Austin in just 10.13 seconds — breaking a 29-year-old national record.

The Strake Jesuit high school senior made headlines earlier this month after his performance at the Texas Region III-6A track meet when he ran the 100-meter dash in just 9.98 seconds — which marked the fastest all-conditions mark ever recorded by a high school sprinter. Boling was helped by a tailwind of just more than twice the legal limit at that meet, however.

He backed that up on Saturday, though, with his wind-legal time still setting the new national record — and he still thinks he can go faster.

“Honestly when I looked at the race before us and saw that the wind was 1.3, I was like 'Oh, I'm excited,’” Boling said, via the Houston Chronicle. “Because after last week, everyone was like 'Oh, the wind wasn't legal' and stuff like that. So I was like 'Alright, I'll just drop a fast time today.’”

The Georgia signee won the long jump earlier on Saturday, too, at 25 feet and 4.5 inches in just two jumps. He currently holds the Texas record at 26-3.5, which is the seventh-best distance in high school track and field history.

"I wasn't aiming for any big records," Boling said, via the Houston Chronicle. "Like in the long jump I only took two jumps because I just wanted to be rested because I had so many events today. I just had to do my job and get as many points for the team as possible."

Boling, naturally, drew plenty of eyes at the meet on Saturday. He even had a police escort with him as he walked around the stadium.

That attention, he said, actually pushes him.

And at the rate he’s going, that’s all but certain to be a good thing.

“I look up and whenever I see the crowd get up to start videoing and watching, it definitely gets me hyped,” Boling said, via the Houston Chronicle. “That's what I love about the 100. Everyone comes to watch it and it's really fun. I got out well and I was just happy with it and the build-up and anticipation was a lot of adrenaline, but it was really fun.”

I wonder if women's sprinting favors fast acceleration over high top end speed or something. It seems like there must be a physical reason that these women sprinters are tiny while the male sprinters are tall.
Shelly-Anne, 35 yo. . . Lucky for us we got rid of Tyreek. . . In 6 years he'll probably have slowed down as much as she has.

It's okay for me. I'd probably put it at 11, to be honest. It's like that race that's just in the middle and doesn't have the prime athletes one way or the other. Like the 800, that's just a killer athletically. Probably the single most taxing race there is on the athlete's body. The 400... well it's not quite the speed race the 100 and 200 are but it's not the 800 or mile.

My top 10 probably looks like this:

1. 100m
2. 1500m
3. 800m (To me, the best overall race)
4. 110m hurdles
5. 4x100m relay
6. 200m (has climbed recently while 800 has dropped)
7. Marathon (a passive watch, for sure, and not exciting)
8. 400m hurdles
9. 4x400m relay
10. Pole Vault... Women's, because there aren't any hotter bitches in the stadium.

After that, a mixed bag of shit select people like.
Kind of funny how everyone's tastes differ. Personally, I don't have any interest in anything longer than 400m.

1. 100m
2. 200m
3. 4x400 relay
4. 110m hurdle
5 400m

Those are about the only events I really care about. The shorter and more exciting the better, IMO.

Fairly similar for me. My favorite relay is actually the 4x200m, but they don't run it at a lot of meets. Up until the last couple years, I'd have ranked the 100m on top. It was traditionally the race for "world's fastest man/woman", but it's so dependent on the start. I think the 200m is a better test of true top-end speed since it's a little less reliant on the start.

1. 200m
2. 100m
3. 400m
4. 110m hurdle
5. 400m hurdle
6. 4x200m relay

Times for the 200m finals tonight are 10:35pm Eastern for the women, 10:50pm for the men. I'll be rooting for Knighton and Steiner, but it would be a pretty big upset for either to take gold, especially for Steiner with S-A F-P running so well. Steiner getting on the podium would be awesome.

To be honest, you make a point. The 100m is highly dependent on the start, but I think the drawback to the 200m is that it is highly dependent on conditioning. Plus the 200m has the added difficulty of running the curve. True top end speed is a large factor in both, though.

I wonder what the ideal length would be to get the best balance of start, top-end speed and conditioning...

Thanks for the times. I would normally be heading to bed, but I will make it a point to stay up a little later to see those. And I'm rooting for Lyles and Fraser-Pryce! Lol. Let the vets have their time. Knighton and Steiner are the future.

150m and run the whole thing on the straight? Just spitballing... :-)

Okay everyone who's interested call your shot.

I'm going S-A F-P in the women's (hate to go chalk but haven't seen anyone who can stay with her) and Abby with a mild upset to get on the podium.

And I'll go with the kid in a USA sweep in the men's, even though my big head says Lyles.

Women's
1. S-A F-P
2. Sharika Jackson
3. Abby

Men's
1. Knighton (sub-19.4)
2. Lyles
3. Bednarek

I think that's the thing that bothers me about the 100m. It's so dependent on the start. Is it really the world's fastest (wo)man if so much of it depends on how quick their reactions are? It's a combination of top-end speed, acceleration, and reaction time.

I think if you really want to define the world's fastest (wo)man, you make it a 100m race, but they're allowed a running start. Envision a 100m track, but the runner can start five or ten or twenty yards behind the starting line, and the clock doesn't start until they hit that line.

I was a 100, 200 and 400 runner in college and my coach was constantly pushing me to run the 800m. You couldn't have paid me to do it, that race is just brutal. Lot of respect for the people that do it.

200m was my favorite. You got to attack the curve and had some distance to catch up if your start was subpar.

So I missed the men and women's 200m races last night, much to my chagrin, but I just watched them on YouTube.

Man, Lyles crushed that race! Really impressive run. I believe he beat Michael Johnson's American record with his 19.31 time.

And I was super impressed with Shericka Jackson. I was not expecting her to win, especially with such a dominant comeback.

I think Abby Steiner ended up coming in around fifth place too, which just goes to show you the different levels.

Steiner was absolutely cooking chicks on the collegiate level, but Worlds and Olympics are just a different beast.

Plus she just came off a full college schedule, NCAA championships, then qualifying for the Worlds. Think they said last night it was around 50 races for her this year. Needs some time off, probably beat to hell. Gonna call her and see if she needs her legs massaged.

She did well if she made 5th. Jackson and Fraser-Pryce are all time greats and Asher-Smith is very good. Not sure who else pipped her but that's a decent start for her.

On best races I've actually got no love for the 200. Might be the best account of the genuine fastest but I much prefer 100 and then 400 for the insane speed endurance.

Like if Mahomes came out this fall and threw 75 TDs.

Almost a full second shaved in a matter of weeks from her own previous record.
