Nzoner's Game Room>A Craig Stout theory on why Mahomes/offense has struggled.
Direckshun 03:31 AM 11-29-2021
His theory is because when defenses are playing the Chiefs, they change up their tendencies completely.

Teams normally do not play two-high shells like they've played against the Chiefs and other teams this season. So ultimately, when they face up against the Chiefs, they are trotting out a new look that the Chiefs simply don't have on tape. Certain players are playing in certain areas that they normally don't, so it's hard to tell in certain circumstances whether this player or that player will play shallow or deeper or bite on certain routes and whatnot. It's simply not on tape.

He mentions this because of the games where the offense has rolled. In particular, the Raiders played a lot of single-high, which they've done all season. Andy Reid's extensive scouting meant the Chiefs had a counter for everything they did and ended up dominating.

The Chargers played us in a two-high shell, but they normally play in a two-high shell anyway, so Andy Reid had that on tape, and had a counter for everything they did and the offense ended up dominating, even though we lost the game.

Otherwise, we're facing two-deeps from teams that simply don't play two-deep and they can only gameplan against what they think the scheme may end up -- all the defensive tape leading up to the game is not very helpful.

It's a plausible theory that we obviously can't prove at this point, but we can certainly keep an eye on it.

Does anybody know what defense Denver usually plays? Any Denver fans among us?

Possibly true.

On the other hand, if our opponents would stop bringing the "Hyperactive Turnover Voodoo Crone" to the games, it would help a great deal.

There oughta be a rule.

I'm not sure why people keep saying the Raiders didn't follow the "blueprint".

They were in a Cover 2 a lot in the first half and the Chiefs scored touchdowns on drives of 9, 10, and 11 plays respectively.

They went back to their base defense quite a bit in the 2nd half, not because they're dumb but because the Cover 2 WAS NOT WORKING. Patrick was picking them apart.

I don’t really care about his rushing yards. If he ever wants people to take him seriously as anything more than a glorified RB, that has to change

oh wow..lol

Defenses have adjusted to slow down the Chiefs explosive offense this season, aligning with two high safety shells and light boxes at an outlier rate.

I'm renaming it the "hold on tight and hope we don't bleed out before the game is over" defense.

Seriously, if we just keep doing these prolonged drives, their defense will be on the field all game!

This plan keeps our defense fresh and should constantly keep them having to score!

That is already changing this season....Lamar has averaged over 260 yards passing per game this season.

He is probably going to get a little over 4000 passing yards this year in 16 games. He has missed a game. And over 1100 yards running.

For the narrative around Jackson to change he needs more than some arbitrary number of yards, he needs a little more consistency as a passer and he needs to play better in the playoffs even if he loses. Last year, Baltimore lost in 2nd round of playoffs 17-3. Justin Tucker uncharacteristically missed 2 field goals which seemed to be in windy conditions. But Lamar threw a pick 6 and missed a wide open receiver.

He can't have that in the first or 2nd round of the playoffs at least for the narrative to change around him.

That's entirely accurate.

You MUST make people pay for that light box. If you're not going to run the ball, you at least have to hit the back in the flat.

If defenses are going by a similar format then we should be even more prepared. We just have to have two game plans. That's it.

Not to mention the turnovers, penalties, and drops. Mahomes has missed a number of throws as well. I still have high we can fix this offense like we fixed the defense.

There is the possibility that when he steps into his pass it doesn't hurt but feels different due to the surgery. Thus, he might have to refine his footwork and technique to gain his accuracy back.

And? The Chiefs problems are all execution related. Stop dropping wide open passes that bounce right to defenders like Madden picks

Mahomes kryptonite.

Why the Chiefs need an elite RB like Jonathan Taylor.

Kelce and Tyreek need to clean up the dropped passes…

Per Sportradar, Travis Kelce has dropped six passes in the last four weeks (including one dropped pass that became an INT), passing teammate Tyreek Hill for the pass-catcher who has cost his team the most expected points from drops.
