In my world no one should lose all their vacation time for a protracted illness. Not the person who got sick, or anyone else. PTO should be for short term illness only.

Oh you got bone cancer - well say goodbye to that month of vacation time you saved up for 2 years, and start begging for PTO donations.

There are better ways to handle it, as has been discussed.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point, but a majority of employers offer short-term disability. That's what it's for.

Right but as we know, no one ever thinks they're going to get sick or have a major car accident or w/e. I think if you're going to create a PTO-based system, then short-term disability should just come folded in to that imo. Like how workers' comp works.

I work for a university that still has vacation time and sick time split out. I'm not sure what happens if I use up my sick time to be honest. But I'm glad to know it won't destroy the vacation time I saved up. Or at least I don't think it will - maybe I should look into that.

I'm still not following. I've never had to pay for it, if that's what you're getting at.

Well apparently not all companies work like that.

Every company I've worked for does.

I don't even think the policy at Rain Man, Inc. (not there these days, but I managed some of that stuff) allows for individual employees to opt out. It's an all or nothing thing. As RM alluded to earlier, it's like $5/month/employee for both STD and LTD, so it's pretty easy to throw it in.

According to SHRM, 78% of employers offer it, though they don't clarify if some employers somehow make employees pay for it.

I get short-term but have to pay extra every month for long-term.

I think we have to give up 40 hours of PTO (if available) before STD kicks in

Interesting. Any idea what your premium is?

Heh. Again, I'm surprised that they don't just throw that in.

So where does losing PTO and PTO donations come in - only on the companies who don't, right?

STD doesn't pay 100%. Typically it's more like 60-70%. So it's still in employees' best interest to use whatever PTO options they have first.
