Saccopoo Memorial Draft Forum>*** 2022 Mock Draft Megathread ***
duncan_idaho 12:45 PM 11-23-2021
Got a mock? Pop it in this thread. Include a picture if you want. Explain your reasoning if you want. Talk about your crushes... if you want.

See a good "pro" mock? Link it up in here and I'll add it to the OP.

Duncan's latest mock

Site
The Draft Network This mock seems to be the most accurate site right now, so I go with this one. I don't pay for it, so no trades here. The plan is for this to be my last mock. I'm going to do it differently, though. I'm running 3 scenarios, and eschewing the 7th round picks, which I would use on a big swings on athleticism and potential. Lotto tickets. James Houston IV is one of them. Note: I used PFF to simulate the trade action, then manually backed up in the 2 "trade" drafts to make selections. Laborious, but gives you best of both worlds, IMO. I think PFF's trade tool is the best, but its board is whack.

Draft slot: 29

Scenario 1: The Chiefs sit pat with their picks and don't make any moves at all. Seems the least likely, but hey...
1.29 | George Karlaftis, DE, Purdue.
1.30 | Boye Mafe, DE, Minnesota.
2.50 | George Pickens, WR, Georgia.
2.62 | Travis Jones, DT, UConn.
3.94 | Zyon McCollum, CB, Sam Houston State.
3.103(Comp for Poles) | Troy Andersen, LB, Montana State.
4.121 | Coby Bryant, CB, Cincinnati.
4.135 | Velus Jones, Jr., Tennessee

Scenario 1 Debrief:
So, sitting and waiting to see what comes to me was pretty successful here. The Chiefs FLOOD the defensive line with reinforcements, including at least 1 ready-made starter and two guys who should - at minimum - be in 50/50 rotations at their spots by year end. The Chiefs still get a big outside WR with tantalizing potential. They add some crazy athletic small-school guys, and a mid-round corner who just fits in the system, and a dynamo return man who might be more at WR.

This looks pretty good. Though I have a hard time believing Karlaftis just falls to 29...

Scenario 2: The Chiefs get aggressive and trade up. But for what? In this case, let's go wide receiver. In this run, Kansas City trades picks 29, 62, and a 2023 3rd to Houston for pick 13 and a 2023 4th, because they ARE as obsessed with a WR as people expect and are aggressive to go get him when the board falls right. They then trade BACK from 30 to 35 with the Jets, also including pick 94 in order to get 69 back. Then, last but not least, KC gets aggressive one more time and moves 103 and 121 for 85 from New England, leaving the Chiefs with 6 picks in the first four rounds.
1.13 | Jameson Williams, WR, Alabama.
2.35 | Cam Thomas, DE, San Diego State.
2.50 | Jalen Pitre, S, Baylor.
3.69 | Zachary Carter, DT, Florida.
3.85 | Sam Williams, DE, Ole Miss.
4.135 | Jaylen Watson, CB, Washington State

Scenario 2 Debrief:
I'm not saying KC should do this or even that I think they will (more on that in a few minutes). I'm just saying, man, what will it look like if the Chiefs get aggressive a few times AND are doing the big move for a WR? In this scenario, KC obviously believes Williams is a game-changer at the NFL level and is taking a small 2022 hit to make 2023+ better. The defensive line still gets reinforced, but the reinforcements are all a shade worse than the sit-pat draft option. If you like Kingsley Enagbare or Josh PAscal more than Thomas, I get it and wouldn't quibble at one of those guys instead. Logan Hall, too. Pitre is such a screaming perfect fit for KC's D. Carter is a great physical talent you can dream about coaching up. Williams' utility is known and gives them a true RE option to pair against their higher-drafted bigger guy. Watson is a developmental corner.

I don't love it. I think Pitre makes the secondary a lot better and makes it easier to move on from Thornhill after 22. They have improved the defensive rotation, though one of the DEs would need to outperform expectations in Year 1 to get it to the same level as Scenario 1. In all, giving up the 2 extra selections in the top 4 rounds hurts the depth you can build, but I think it's more like what KC will do.

Scenario 3: Same movements as #2
1.13 | Jermaine Johnson II, DE, Florida State.
2.35 | Christian Watson, WR, North Dakota State.
2.50 | Sam Williams, DE, Ole Miss.
3.69 | Bryan Cook, S, Cincinnati.
3.85 | Martin Emerson, CB, Miss. State.
4.135 | Braxton Jones, T, Southern Utah

Scenario 3 Debrief:
This is the type of situation where I see KC paying the price to move up... if Johnson falls this far, I'd be shocked if KC isn't aggressively moving up. With this run, I take a risky but high upside WR in Watson (but you could sub in Pickens or Jahan Dotson or Tolbert or Metchie or Skyy Moore or really any of those tier 2 guys here if you prefer). The secondary reinforcements aren't flashy but are good fits.

In this one, I think the plan has to become adding either another safety or corner in free agency before the season. Ideally, it's someone who can handle the slot and let Sneed thriver on the outside. The DL gets a major boost and some potential star power in Johnson and Williams, and the OL gets another T option and potential long-term starter to develop.

Having completed the exercise and looking at the scenariors, I like the first one the most. But it really does come down to how the board breaks.

Ojabo, Thomas and Williams would give this team some nasty pass rush for the next 4-5 years. It would allow us to justify a big extension for Jones next offseason because the rest of the DL would be cheap….if he balls out this year.

With the cost of WRs SKYYrocketing the last couple years, getting the 2 WRs with the lowest drop rates that both get constant separation and are playmakers would be an amazing move towards keeping the cap balanced enough to make some big FA swings in the future. I love both of these picks, even though most will think I overdrafted Skyy.

James Cook has been flying up boards the more his tape is getting watched and people realize he’s a game breaker with a skill set that translates perfectly to KCs offense. This is our Bryant Westbrook. No surprise he’s Dalvins brother.

Zyon has elite size and skills for CB and would be a great prospect to get a chance at replacing Ward. He has great ball skills and I think is one of the most underrated players in this whole draft.

Jackson is a linebacker that works well in space, is heady and has an ability to get to the QB in times he’s asked to blitz, as well. Adding to our pass rush ability, long term.

Swanson is a total sleeper pick at OT that. Is very strong in pass protection. The other 3 picks in the 7th were simply need with nice PFF grades but I know nothing else about them. They are 7th round picks for a reason.

I think this draft puts us sin a really nice spot, going forward.

Definitely falling into something of a rut with these...

29) Burks
30) Ojabo
50) Metchie
62) Williams
94) Dulcich
103) Mathis
121) McCollum
135) Max Mitchell

The third round turned into a real bloodbath for me in this one, though.

Austin at 73, Cross at 74, Chenal at 77, Beavers at 79, Jackson at 80, Breece Hall at 81, Troy Anderson at 84, Nik Bonitto at 88, Jalen Tolbert at 90.

What it tells me is that it may be a real nice thing to turn one or both of those 1st rounders into a spare pick in the early 3rd. Picks 70-90 routinely seem to have some REALLY nice value plays.

Yeah, I just like the way this 'load the hell out of the middle rounds' approach breaks out.

30: Ojabo
40: Jones
54: Pickens
62: Mathis
72: Metchi
85: Dulcich
94: Sam Williams
121: Jeffrey Gunter
135: Pierre Strong

Granted, Drafting 5 DL and 2 WRs may be a LITTLE extreme, but there's just a lot of firepower in the 50-100 range the more and more you play around with it.

I don't know who Ian Cummings is but he apparently writes for PFN....home to the mock that most people use. Here is his 7 round mock draft.

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2...ummings-april/

29) Kansas City Chiefs (from SF via MIA): Kaiir Elam, CB, Florida
Kaiir Elam didn’t measure quite as long as expected, so it’ll be interesting to see if some teams rule him out for that. The Chiefs could be one of those teams, but looking at the tape, Elam certainly plays beyond his frame. And there’s enough to like, where a few eighths of an inch shouldn’t matter. Bottom line: KC needs physical cornerbacks. Elam has that physicality along with explosiveness and fluidity, and he’s far from a liability with his length.

30) Kansas City Chiefs: Travis Jones, DT, Connecticut
Good luck keeping up with the Joneses now. The Chiefs now have two potential game-wreckers with that surname after selecting Connecticut defensive tackle Travis Jones in Round 1 of this 2022 NFL Mock Draft. Jones profiles best at nose tackle with his massive 6’4 3/8″, 325-pound frame, but he has the athleticism and violent hands to provide pass-rushing utility and shift around a bit. With Chris Jones at his side, the UConn product could be a handful for blocking units.

50) Kansas City Chiefs: Drake Jackson, EDGE, USC
The hand usage is still an area of concern for Drake Jackson, but he’s a moldable ball of clay for whoever selects him. He measured in at 273 pounds at his pro day and still ran a strong 7.09 three-cone at that size. He also has 34″ arms and tested with a 36.5″ vertical and a 127″ broad at the NFL Combine.

62) Kansas City Chiefs: Abraham Lucas, OT, Washington State
An underrated potential need for the Chiefs is right tackle. Lucas Niang has shown his flashes, but he hasn’t always been available due to injury. At the very least, Abraham Lucas can be a solid swing tackle with his traits and smooth pass protection. But he has natural RT ability as well.

94) Kansas City Chiefs
Jelani Woods, TE, Virginia

A rare size/athleticism specimen with seam and red-zone utility behind Travis Kelce.

103) Kansas City Chiefs
Wan’Dale Robinson, WR, Kentucky

A former RB whose propensity for RAC yards would be maximized with the Chiefs.

121) Kansas City Chiefs
Akayleb Evans, CB, Missouri

135) Kansas City Chiefs
Kyren Williams, RB, Notre Dame

233) Kansas City Chiefs
Chris Hinton, DT, Michigan

243) Kansas City Chiefs
Samori Toure, WR, Nebraska

251) Kansas City Chiefs
Jordan Jackson, DT, Air Force

259) Kansas City Chiefs

Not sure why the excessive DT picks. I don't know enough about the late guys to know if they're light enough to play SDE.

I went into this draft looking to trade up for Jermaine Johnson if he fell to around 15. Then Walker, Hutchinson and Thibodaux went 1,2 and 3 and Karlaftis and Johnson went 11 and 12. I think that's a very real possibility. So I traded back from 29 and got 42 and 73

Provided they got their edge, cb, wr needs addressed, Jelani Woods is the only TE I would not be unhappy to see drafted.

It would be very interesting to see how Andy would use him. Much bigger and faster than a Jody Fortson (6-7, 260 and runs a 4.61 40). Played QB in high school.

Run some scenarios where you trade back with the jets and Seahawks for those sweet second and third round picks. We need to add around 20 nfl capable bodies to the roster. Join the dark side and shake up your approach!

He could be a really good edge. Best? I'm not betting against Hutchinson and Thibodeaux. If Thibodeaux fails I think it ends up being off-the-field antics.

What's so difficult with him is actually projecting him on the edge because he rarely had reps outside. He's a slightly longer version of Cam Thomas for me right now, and I like that but it's so difficult to see him against tackles that can match his athleticism and length. He's a guy you take to develop in round 2 for sure and I'd 100% support him as a pick. If we're talking round 1 though, I'm not so sure about that.

I will say that Veach should be able to draft some key defensive player and add some serious depth to the offense. Is it draft weekend yet?

Most of my mocks I have us trading back and taking him mid-2nd. His tape just popped more than most of the others for me, but I haven't really watched a lot on the guys I don't see us having a chance at because they'll be long gone by the time we pick.
