I'll be pissed if they fail to move Whit. I love the guy, but it makes no sense to hold onto him. Get some top prospects and start the rebuild in earnest!!!!

Have to find the team willing to send what you want/need back.

No reason to be pissed. If teams won’t give up assets that make it worthwhile, no point in doing it.

(India santillan Siri, whoever they all are)

India is a good prospect but not really an elite one. More top 75 than top 30, which is what is needed as a centerpiece to move Merrifield. I don’t think the other two are top 30. I wouldn’t do that.

To continue experiencing success (and allow the team to regain service time).

Still, I suspect you’ll get your wish once the July 31 deadline passes.

Is there any consensus on whether returns are better at the trade deadline or in the off-season?

Short-term pieces usually better returns in-season than they would in the offseason. There’s an immediacy/urgency that helps.

Long-term pieces are often easier to move in the offseason, as teams are doing more true roster construction then.

Either way it doesn't seem like Moore is all that open to trading him considering he shot down any speculation about such a trade this past off-season.

Why would you be pissed? Isn't he signed cheap for a few more years?

Of all of Dayton's trades, people will look back and wonder how he pulled that one off.
I wonder if the Facebook fans are still mad about this trade.

Only dipshits like you keep harping about trading Merrfield. If some team makes an over the top offer they will trade him, if not he is cheap and signed up long term.

If you think we will be good in 2021 you keep Whit. No sense in wasting a very valuable trade asset that could get us 2-3 players who figure into 2022+.

Sure. But on the flip side, you don’t just give him away for an underwhelming trade package.

If your best offer is for a prospect in the bottom quarter of the top 100, is that really worth giving up a fan favorite player who will probably still be an average or better starter by the time they’re going for it again, at a discounted rate?

Singer and Bubic are both guys in that range for the Royals.

Would you be excited to get a return for Whit that was:

Brady Singer (back-end floor, #3 upside)
Nick Pratto
Gerson Garabito

?

Because that’s the type of thing that apparently is out there.

Ben Zobrist helped us win a World Series at 34 years old. He hit .300 with an 800 OPS last year at 37 years old. I've yet to hear anyone make any kind of compelling argument as to why Whit is going to fall off a cliff in two years.

It's certainly possible, and his SB totals are 100% going to go down, but the guy is a hitting machine with a top-shelf eye at the plate. He's not a power hitter whose power is going to be sapped as he ages.

I loved the Moose trade, but if you get a Phillips/Lopez type return for Whit you've totally blown it. Teams like the Yankees and Dodgers have shown zero desire to trade top prospects. What can you do? You have to get a Lucas Giolito type prospect back.

Agreed, especially when predictive statistics showed O'Hearn to be EXTREMELY unlucky this year in the MLB

Why be pissed? We aren't competitive. So having Whit on the team has virtually no value. You trade him with whatever you can get, this year or last. Whoever the higher bidder is. If that is a shitty return, so be it. Why keep good players on a losing team?

I get why the owner would want to keep Whit. Ticket sales. But as a fan? There is absolutely no point.
