fangraphs scouting report

Full Report
It’s tough to measure the performance of Northeast prep players due to the level of competition, but Mozzicato certainly performed this spring, throwing a one-hit, 17-strikeout shutout in the state championship game and ending his year with a 49.2 inning scoreless streak. He’s good-frame, athletic southpaw with clean mechanics and while his fastball doesn’t light-up the radar guns at 90-92 mph, scouts are near universal in their projection of more velocity to come. His best pitch is a present plus curveball with heavy downward action that checks plenty of team’s analytical boxes. He’ll flash a rare changeup that should end up average. Mizzicato throws a lot of strikes, but like most prep arms, will need to learn how to command within the zone. He might need a bit more seasoning than other seven-figure high school pitchers, but provides middle-of-the-rotation upside.

mlb pipeline scouting report

https://www.mlb.com/prospects/draft/

The best pitcher from Connecticut to sign out of high school was Carl Pavano, a 13th-round pick back in 1994. Charlie Morton is one of the best to sign in the top five rounds as a third-rounder in 2002. Mozzicato is an athletic lefty who jumped on the radar more this spring with a bit of a velocity jump to give him the chance to be the first prep arm from the Nutmeg State to go in the top five rounds since 2014.

Over the summer, Mozzicato’s fastball topped out at 91 and was below-average from a velocity standpoint, typically sitting in the upper-80s. After spending time working out at Cressey Sports Performance, he came out this spring throwing considerably harder, sitting around 91 mph and touching 93 mph consistently. His curveball is the selling point here, a plus breaker now with high spin.

The lefty has a changeup and while he doesn’t need it much at this level, there’s reason to believe from his athleticism and delivery that he’ll develop a solid offspeed pitch in time. He’s filled up the strike zone and been unhittable this spring with more and more attention from scouts, making one wonder if he’ll ever set foot on UConn’s campus.

Take the talent that’s there. Don’t overthink it.

Moore should not be GM Friday.

Did we just draft Tyson Jackson again?

You would have been laughed at 2 years ago if you predicted that Rocker would fall down the draft board and get passed up by multiple high school and college pitchers.

ESPN’s draft guru Kiley McDaniel said this week, “some teams are talking about (Frank Mozzicato) in the middle of the first round. Some very respected evaluators are saying this guy is the second best high school pitcher in the draft.”
… We’ll find out tonight.

Dayton definitely went under slot, but this draft has depth into rounds 2-4 especially at the high school level. Interested to see who we take. Keep an eye on high school players who might have high signing demands
