Australian Defence Force soldiers will undergo training on the weekend before beginning unarmed patrols on Monday.

But many have questioned whether the military intervention is necessary, calling it heavy-handed.

The lockdown - in place until at least 28 August - bars people from leaving their home except for essential exercise, shopping, caregiving and other reasons.

Despite five weeks of lockdown, infections in the nation's largest city continue to spread. Officials recorded 170 new cases on Friday.

Soldiers will join police in virus hotspots to ensure people are following the rules, which include a 10km (6.2 miles) travel limit.

State Police Minister David Elliott said it would help because a small minority of Sydneysiders thought "the rules didn't apply to them".

Information provided by health officials indicates the virus is mainly spreading through permitted movement.

The Australian Lawyers Alliance, a civil rights group, called the deployment a "concerning use" of the army in a liberal democracy.

The outbreak has largely affected critical workers and large family groups in the city's poorer and ethnically diverse west and south-west suburbs. About two million people live there.

Critics say those areas have already faced "targeted" policing measures. They point out restrictions there are harsher than for the rest of Sydney.

"Our people are one of the poorest demographics, and as it is, they already feel picked on and marginalised," said Steve Christou, one local mayor.

"They can't afford to pay the mortgage, the rent, the food or work. Now to throw out the army to enforce lockdown on the streets is going to be a huge issue to these people," he told SBS.

Others have called for the government to increase its vaccine drive and support services for the affected communities.

Australia's rate of vaccination - 17% of the adult population - remains one of the lowest among OECD nations.

Northern Territory Police have arrested three people who escaped from Darwin’s Howard Springs Covid-19 facility earlier this morning.

All three tested negative for Covid on Tuesday and have now been taken into custody.

Earlier, police said the trio allegedly jumped the fence at the Centre for National Resilience just before 4.40am.

“Police and staff at the Centre for National Resilience are currently confirming the absconder’s identities prior to releasing further information,” police said.

Howard Springs is a large, open-air facility that is being used to quarantine Australians returning from overseas. It is also housing a number of residents from Katherine and surrounding areas, where an outbreak of Covid-19 erupted last month.

The alleged escape comes a day after a returned traveller tested positive for the Omicron variant in the facility and the territory continues to fight Covid outbreaks in remote communities.

The NT health minister, Natasha Fyles, confirmed on Tuesday that a man in his 30s had been diagnosed with the new variant.

He arrived in Darwin on a repatriation flight from South Africa last week and his positive virus result was confirmed on Friday.

“I can confirm today that the genomic sequencing has shown that the man does have the Omicron variant of Covid-19,” Fyles said. “So [it is] the first case for the Northern Territory.”

The territory recorded no new cases overnight . “We have negative wastewater results right across Katherine, which is very pleasing, including Bicentennial Road which … we’ve been closely watching,” Fyles said.
As of Tuesday, there were 58 cases of Covid-19 in the NT.

International arrivals on repatriation flights are required to quarantine at Howard Springs for 14 days. Travellers who arrive on standard international flights into Darwin airport are permitted to quarantine for seven days at their homes or another suitable location.

A 27-year-old man allegedly absconded from quarantine last week before being found on Darwin’s main strip.

Nah.

Close the border to all immigration and refuse to accept any "refugees" and a lot of problems will attend to themselves on their own.

Somewhat unrelated, why is it that with every problem a leftist identifies the answer is adding barriers preventing people from achieving something?

This shit is truly bone chilling.

And to think, 50% of our brainwashed population would likely welcome this in our country. I honestly can't even believe this is happening and people are acting like it's no big deal. This is most slippery slope humanity has been on in a very long time.

Reports of fully vaccinated individuals contracting COVID are on the rise.

Cases are appearing worldwide, but let’s take a look at Australia as they currently have some of the strictest COVID restrictions in the world. A gym in Sydney only permitted fully vaccinated patrons but was stunned when 15 people fell ill with the virus. The owner said he went “above and beyond” to follow the harsh COVID guidelines, and he had only reopened in October after the government forced gyms to close. In Melbourne, 11 people contracted COVID at a restaurant that also only permitted fully vaccinated patrons. The government will likely vilify small businesses with investigations and fines rather than admitting that the vaccine is ineffective.

The Australian government can and will track down anyone who came into contact with the “diseased” and force them to self-isolate regardless of vaccination status. Reuters reported that fully vaccinated Australians must quarantine for 72 hours upon entering their country due to omicron. Plans to allow skilled migrants to enter the country have halted, and the government seems prepared to ruin its economy by implementing additional restrictions for a virus that can never be eradicated. It almost makes sense as to why Australia continues to invest in their quarantine camps — they know the vaccines do not prevent transmission.

The 50% who want it here can be easily taken down by a fraction of the remaining 50%.

Very true from a citizen perspective, but sadly those insane 50% that want this in our country have the federal government firmly in their corner.

This is going to get very ugly no matter how we slice it, because rest assured they will attempt to implement this shit here. It's just a matter of when.

May be reposting, but the Australians are herding their citizens into concentration camps. This is the "progressive" way of handling troublemakers and always has been.
