Nzoner's Game Room>Craig Stout: Chris Jones has been lining up at DE a TON at OTAs.
Direckshun 05:02 PM 05-28-2021
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Honestly, I’d rather keep him along the interior where he is elite. But Stout mentioned that the base DL is Jones and Clark on the edges with Reed and Nnadi along the interior.

That’s a big risk the team is taking, and the early returns in spot duty last year were not encouraging.

But Stout mentions that Jones has slimmed down a ton as well, clearly prepared to take a stronger role at RDE.

Maybe the most important thing to watch for our defense.

He also mentions Humphrey is your starting center.

That is from Spags himself, but I’m sure you know what his plan is better than he does.

JFC it’s like some of you don’t even pay attention to what is being said, you just keep saying the same shit over and over again.

The Chiefs will do that against running teams, not passing teams. If the Chiefs are daring you to pass, it’s because they don’t believe you can beat them that way. This isn’t ****ing rocket science.

If the Browns want to try to beat us throwing the ball as opposed to running it, by all means, go right on ahead. I also don’t believe that our pass rush drops off THAT much.
Even run first teams like the Browns and Ravens are smart enough to exploit that kind of stuff.

You can design this for matchups but what happens when the QB audibles to a pass?

Again there are flaws to this plan and there’s nothing wrong with discussing them. I hope Chris doesn’t play much DE bc he isn’t good at bending the edge as one.

We’ve seen this team try new things and that’s great. Sometimes it’s not worked out at all

He's unique in that he's not built like a classic tackle, but he seems too big to be a 4-3 end. I wonder if that's part of his magic, in that he's not like any other guys that offensive linemen see on film.

But I worry a little bit about him at end. Tackles are going to be quicker against his burst, and after that it's going to be all about power, where it helps to be lined up closer to the QB.
He’s not going to be asked to be an edge rusher. He will still be rushing from the interior the majority of passing downs.

I’ll take my chances with Pat and our offense against Baker or Lamar trying to get it done through the air. How could you look at either of those teams and not understand why forcing them to go away from the run early would be a good thing?

If I’m the Browns I don’t give a shit where Chris Jones is lined up. I’m running again and again and again bc Neimann is likely starting.

Here's hoping they coach him up there, because he wasn't great.
staylor already responded, but I'm going to double down on him.

There is a LARGE, LARGE, LARGE difference between sticking a guy at DE for one game in the middle of the season, when your DE group has been decimated by injury - they were missing Okafor, that's the game where Ogbah got hurt (IIRC), and Frank Clark was dinged up. It was before they signed Suggs. Some might even say that's an ENORMOUS difference from:

I know you like to have things to freak out about and question the team about, but YOU'RE the one who needs to pump the breaks on worrying about this until we see it in a game (rather than telling all the rest of us we know how it's going to go, and we should stop defending until we see it in a game).

This is the exact opposite of what was discussed all week on 610 and 810.

Jones wants to be a DE full time and says he plans on dominating.

Lol no. He’s absolutely not going to be a DE full time. There are photos with him lining up inside next to Reed from OTA’s.

Spags himself has even said whether he plays DE or not will depend on matchups.

OTA photos don't mean much. I was just stating what Jones wants and thinks he is capable of.

Those words of what a player thinks they are capable of reminds me a bit of DT's positional move to the "Falcon" position of DE/LB in 1997 or 98. He promised 20+ sacks that year.

We know how that turned out. I have more faith in this coaching staff and this set of players than I ever had in the past.

Let the professionals figure it out and just enjoy the game.

I think people are reading way too much into this...KC signing Reed is allowing them to experiment. They also lost K-Pass so they might be seeing if Jones can fill in..if an injury occurs.

Giving Reed a ton of reps, in a new defense, during OTAs probably has a lot to do with this also..

They arent going to play the 2nd best DT in the NFL out of position much...unless there is a mismatch they might try to exploit.

That said... it would be cool if it works out but its an entirely different position...the odds are pretty slim.

I am not under the illusion that my opinion matters to Spags-lol

We got very limited production from the left side last year- if they think Jones can bullrush the OT and smash him back into the QB's throwing lane on a regular basis, I am all for it. He couldn't be any worse than KPass.

Can he set the edge against the run?

Jones is the best pass rusher on this team.

They're going to line him up everywhere on the DL. Teams will have to try and plan for that. Good luck.
