Nzoner's Game Room>Burrow and Herbert extension cost
The Franchise 12:37 PM 01-25-2023

Expectation around the league is for Justin Herbert’s (and Joe Burrow’s) contract extension(s) to surpass the $50.3 million AAV currently held by Aaron Rodgers as QB1 on the market, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Exactly what I've been saying for months. They're going to compete for the highest-paid QB in the league. And one of them will be, at least until the next big name QB becomes eligible.

Herbert has zero “it” factor.

They’ll keep Chase. I think Higgins is a goner though. Chase will get north of $30M while Higgins will demand north of $25M. They will send Higgins somewhere else to get that money. But the combo of Burrow & Chase at $85-90M per year is going to mess up the roster in general, especially the defense.

They won't be able to afford Reader in '24, when he becomes an UFA. They could tag him...

Good move by Herb. He needs to get paid because he's not going to be winning jack and shit with that jamoke coach sabotaging the team.

Nope. Been saying this since they lost to the Jags in the playoffs.

If they follow our mold with Patrick, they can still keep Burrow and Herbert's cap hits relatively low until like 2025 or 2026.

The belt will tighten, already has for the Chargers, but it won't be a massive issue as long as either team can continue to draft well in the meantime.

The thing is the bulk of the Bengals stars were not only 1st round picks, they were high 1st round picks.

Can they keep drafting well when they're drafting 28th overall every year? That remains to be seen.

If the Bengals were planning long-term, they'd trade Higgins this offseason and use the draft capital to get inexpensive production somewhere.

He's got a year left on his rookie deal so they don't HAVE to do it yet, but that would give them the most value in trade. Could probably move him to a team looking for a franchise WR for a LOT.

Tyler Boyd would look great in a 2024 Chiefs uni.

The Bengals have done a great job in the FA market as well. Guys like Hendrickson and Awuzie were massive hits. Hell, even Apple has been a hit for them.

EDIT: Bengals are also almost assuredly going to lose their DC to a head coaching role this offseason.

Following that model assumes the players and agents are willing to play ball, and also that the owners can afford to dump more and more cash into escrow every time the rolling guarantees occur.
