2023 – A new beginning for the Royals. Matt Quatraro era begins. A year to see which of our young players will make up the core going forward. Can Bobby Witt Jr become a superstar SS or will go to the hot corner? Will Brady Singer take the next step forward? Will Salvy be Salvy? Will Big Vin or Pratto take first base? Will they find a position for MJ? Who else emerges from the youth movement? Not to mention the development of the new downtown stadium.

A ton? No.
But it's more of a factor than you seem to think.
Honestly, I think the most important managerial factor is in how they handle the clubhouse. Balancing PT, managing personalities and morale, having a good plan for keeping the team organized and etc.
Tactical decisions are more of "does he do a bunch of stupid shit that exposes his players to injury or failure" factor. I don't think a great tactical manager is worth much. A bad tactical manager, one who overuses his best bullpen arms, or who consistently leaves his starters in too long, etc. can do a lot more damage than a genius tactical guy can do good. [Reply]

All 7 runs scored with two outs. Both walks and hit by batter scored. Then previous two innings - Royals had a runner on third twice and couldn't score. That is how you lose ballgames. [Reply]

I brought up Duncan because there was no evidence Grifol ever really did anything with the Royals. Duncan was the first to whistleblow about the strange approach Grifol was having our players take at the plate in 2014's Spring Training (while he was our hitting coach). Grifol was the one who disastrously had our players switch their approach by "being aggressive with low pitches" to start the 2014 season until he resigned mid-year due to the Royals amazingly hitting no homers and into ground ball outs at an alarming rate to start the year.
He then was our catching coach for a while -- he was the one who got Salvy to do that "whipping/poke motion" to try to frame pitchers that helped result in Salvy to be among the worst in the league at framing pitches.
And beyond that, he was just always sort of around -- sort of in roles epitomized by this gif (Salvy seemed to like him, tho, FWIW).
We haven't had much to cheer about. But hey -- watching the White Sox quit is always fun no matter what year it is (did they really blow their window with nothing to show for it other than a pitstop by Tony La Russa?) [Reply]
J.J. Picollo tells Ryan Lefebvre on @610SportsKC that Drew Waters will start his rehab assignment in Omaha this week and Daniel Lynch will start Tuesday for NW Arkansas. If all goes well, he'll then start for Omaha. #Royals
