Media Center>Better Call Saul
rico 11:01 PM 10-06-2013

As I am sure many of y'all already know, a spinoff of "Breaking Bad" titled "Better Call Saul" will be airing in 2014. This is going to be a prequel to Breaking Bad and will be based on the character of Saul Goodman from "Breaking Bad."

I, for one, will be watching. I'm sure the majority of all of you other "Breaking Bad" fans will be as well. Might as well get the discussion going sooner rather than later.

So... what are your hopes, expectations and/or concerns with the show? Here are some of mine:

Hopes: I hope to see Saul do his thing in the courtroom. I hope to see strong, unique supporting characters. I hope to see Breaking Bad foreshadowing. I hope he has an intriguing paralegal and/or assistant. I hope to see Breaking Bad characters such as Fring, Mike, etc...whoever. I hope the show kicks ass.

Expectations: I don't expect it to be as good as "Breaking Bad" (because nothing else is, really), but I expect it to be good since Vince Gilligan is writing. I somewhat expect it to have an even balance of comedy and drama...since Saul undeniably provides a substantial amount of comedic relief in "Breaking Bad." I expect to see "courtroom Saul." I expect the "Breaking Bad" references and character cameos to be less than what I hope. If it isn't even a fraction as good as "Breaking Bad," I expect it to be better than 95% of everything else on TV, since there is some shitty shit on TV these days.

Concerns: I'd be a liar if I were to say that I didn't think this show has potential of flopping and certainly failing to meet the presumed high expectations of the audience. Don't get me wrong, I think it will be good... but I think it COULD suck if not executed properly. My main concern is Saul ultimately proving himself to be a "little dab will do ya" type of character, which would lead to a show centered around his character not working out. I am hoping that the character of Saul will not be so over-used and constantly over the top, that he becomes annoying to me, thus ruining his character for me altogether... Not saying I think this will be how it goes down...just saying I think there is a CHANCE of this being the case, which prompts me to believe that a strong supporting cast is VITAL in terms of the amount of success/quality this show will accumulate. All in all, I don't think VG will steer us in an unfortunate direction though...I think they'll pull it off.

Thoughts?

DISCUS!!!!

According to Howard, the scotch was a 1966 that was 35 years old so we're looking at 2001. Breaking Bad first ran in January of 2008 so unless they were having it take place in the past, (which is a little unlikely due to the water on Mars news reports that were big in 2009 that Walt was watching in the bar.... unless that was just a documentary, I'm not sure) we have a few years to go yet. They do seem to be pushing things a little bit.

One thing I have to admit is that a lot of the characters aren't aging very well. Gus and his goons especially.

Yeah, Gus looks 20 years older in a show that was supposed to take place 10 years prior. But what do you do; age is a bitch.

Yeah, this has always been set in the early 2000s. I don't remember exactly what it was but you could piece that together in the first season based on a couple of little snippets (I think there was something that showed his driver's license and DOB then later he provided his age).

Last night's episode was a little too meandery. They made some clear character development steps but it sure seemed like a strained road getting there.

And frankly, I still think he made the name a little jewish sounding on purpose. Even his character was made to look a little like the stereotypical hollywood jewish guy on the TV spot.

He does do it on purpose, I couldn't remember the exact quote so I looked it up. In the "Better Call Saul" episode of BB (season 2 ep 9) he says:

Faith and begorrah! A fellow potato eater! My real name's McGill. The Jew thing I just do for the homeboys. They all want a pipe-hitting member of the tribe, so to speak...

Maybe I'm a dork but loved seeing Krazy 8 too.

He has a ways to go because he looked like a p^ssy in that episode and was more ruthless in BB.

He must do well in the next 7 years, but eventually he is going to get turned out by a certain DEA agent.....

Nacho is going to get pinched or killed somewhere down the line.

Oh, Nacho isn't very happy with Salamanca.

Think about it though, that beating from Nacho might have been what made him Crazy 8. He was just a bored kid who worked in his dad's furniture store. He got into the game thinking he could half step it and took a beating. At this point there's no getting away from it, so he went all in.

It looks like a poisoning is in the offing for Don Hector with Nacho taking the long look at the pill.

He pocketed one of them. Wouldn't be hard to just slide open that gel-cap and put something nasty in there. And as a drug pusher, I'd imagine he could find somebody that would know how to manufacture something from scratch that looks just like that pill as well.

Yeah, gotta figure that Nacho's gonna see how much pressure Hector puts on him and if it gets too far, he's gonna slip him a particularly nasty mickey.

I'm hoping we don't see him for a long while yet.

I think there's been a little too much BB fan service this year. As someone that came to appreciate Saul BEFORE breaking bad (and independent of it), I'd hate to see them just merge the two worlds.

Side note - I got approved for a Nielsen box last week. Didn't ask for one, they just sent me a form, I filled out out, they sent me an EM and now I can be a Nielsen viewer if I want to be. I'm kinda intrigued by the idea. I hope they'd give show credit for all the shit I record and watch later.

Nacho's presence is definitely still felt in BB - see Saul's introductory episode for reference.
