I'll grudgingly link cnn to support journalism even though they fill their page with ads and noise.
The short version is that over 300,000 people have signed up for an event on Facebook to storm Area 51 so they can see what's inside. I suspect that most will be killed, eaten, or cast off into alternate universes, but I'm hoping that a few will make it back out to share their findings.
Yeah, I don't think they realize just how badly this goes for them if they truly got riled up. If it's a bunch of yahoos that get hot, mill around a bit and then head back, well they'll be fine.
But if 100K people really decide it's time to storm an armed, top secret military installation, they'd get wiped out within about 15 minutes. This isn't one of those urban warfare environments where they can hide around buildings and what not - they're exposed and lacking cover. A couple A-10s and a Spooky hovering overhead will knock out about 80% of them in the first few minutes.
I would like to second those that are suggesting that this was fun when it was goofin' on the internet, but it's time for everyone to get smart and go home before a whole lot of folks be get dead. They're not gonna let you in so if your idea is that you're going to overwhelm them, that's not trespassing, that's invading a United State military base.
FWIW, the only people I know IRL who have responded to the Facebook event are RaiderRoommate and two girls that are kind of into horror movies / unironically stating they're into witchcraft types. [Reply]
Now I’m kinda intrigued to see this happen. It would be a bad look if the military shot down 100K weirdoes but you can’t have people storming military bases. [Reply]

I'll look forward to meeting them as we assemble. [Reply]

Agree with all. It’s rough terrain in summer heat so actual numbers to site are few diehards If any. [Reply]

But it worked. The natives won. The cavalry got overrun by sheer force and fury. And I could see the same thing happening here.

They don't take kindly to that.
I sat through a live fire demonstration at Fort Knox back in 1970? 71? and it became quite clear to me, very quickly that I would NEVER want to be on the receiving end of a wart hog...or an Apache.....
My god they can tear up a boatload of Real estate in a big hurry. [Reply]

What's funny is that it will never even get to the gates. They won't let even a thousand people congregate before people start being arrested and tear gas brought out by the police. If you stand outside a bank and tell a cop you're going to go in and Rob it, he's not going to wait for you to do the crime before arresting you. The same situation applies here. Once some arrests and tear gas start flying around people will flee. [Reply]

That's why I liked that meme so much.
The 'brrrrtt' noise is just perfect. Do NOT end up on the other side of a minigun, lads. [Reply]
Also doesn't the military have microwaved-based non-lethal weaponry at their disposal? Run such a thing at like quarter power in the Nevada desert and people are gonna start feeling crispy real fuckin quick. [Reply]
