For the Royals, he's likely not one of the top bullpen pieces anymore - even as an inventory piece. Our inventory is actually pretty exciting going into 2022 - mostly young, power arms.

Can someone tell me more about pitcher Jonathan Bowlan who was just added to the 40 man roster?

I was surprised that he needed to be added since he just came off of Tommy John surgery from last season.

I can see why the Royals value him, but it seems like another player might be better to add to the 40 man at this time.

Maybe this is more of a question about how soon can pitchers return from Tommy John surgery and then contribute to a 26 man roster?

He will be an immediate 60 day IL candidate once the new season begins. So a team can select him in the rule 5 draft and stash him on their IL list (conceivably for the entire year) instead of keeping him in their bullpen all year. Tons of teams would jump on Bowlan if we left him exposed. We had to protect him, given his talent. We will put him on the 60 day IL and open a roster spot once the season begins.

The only way I can get on board with this is if the stubborn insistence on keeping him around is based on something the new hitting development guys are seeing/saying about him.

But even then... we have 1000 Plate Appearances which tell us he's a .215/.294/.401 guy.

Now, maybe their plan is to work a deal for Haake and/or Cox. I don't know. They have a surplus there and it would make sense to move some volume for an established player or for a lower level guy who doesn't have to be on the 40-man yet.
This teams fascination with O'Hearn is baffling. Like playing him in RF, it's ridiculous.

There are days I really feel like Hunter Dozier and Ryan O'Hearn must be the porn snitches for Dayton cause dudes are awful, keep playing and hell Dozier got paid.

It is strange. Was a tendency of Matheny's in St. Louis, though. May be that.

Dozier at least had a full, fantastic season under his belt in his career. O'Hearn's got... nothing.

Second half Dozier (.261/.331/.439) at least is a viable major league player. Hopefully he can give them more of that.

He was a 3 win player in 2019. Total deal pays him $25M. If he can chip in 2 wins a year the next few seasons, it's actually fair value.

When do you see the Royals getting active in free agency Dunc? Team looks to be coming together on paper.

Thanks. I figured the TJ injury would make Bowlan kind of off limits for another team to draft. At some point in the season the drafting team does have to put them on the 26 man roster.

It makes sense though that the Royals add him to the 40 man and later put him back on their 60 Day IL to protect him. Since he had the TJ surgery in late May, he might be throwing in the minor leagues later in the 2022 season.

I was adamant that the Royals should trade Dozier after 19. But of course here we are...

What a writer for mlbtraderumors.com had to say about Jonathan Bowlan being added to the 40 man roster.

Bowlan’s second-round pedigree and strong 2019 season was clearly enough for the Royals to worry a rival team would pounce on a Rule 5 draft selection, even if Bowlan spends a portion of 2022 recovering from surgery.

Hard to say. Sounds like they’ll take a shot at Seiyaa Suzuki. I could see a FA SP as well. Zack Greinke might make some sense, actually.

I remember that. Don’t think there was much of a market for him due to his short track record.

If they make universal DH happen, I could see Greinke staying in the AL. Might be nice having him back for his swan song. At the least, he'll be a quote machine and fun for the beat writers to cover.
