totally not talking about big money, just smart acquisitions

Hopefully some pitchers, because that's where we are screwed.

And it's an objectively good decision to say this. The fact is, the Royals have the highest variance of any team in baseball next year. I'm not even sure it's close.

Sunny projection: everyone on the hitting side takes a step forward, or at least the key guys do.Witt is Trea Turner at the plate and on the base paths. Vinny ascends into a solidly above average first baseman. Salvy has another 35 hr season in him where he stays healthy. Singer proves he's a top of rotation starter. The new pitching coach patches up the other guys and we have a mildly decent staff en route to an Orioles like season where we could add at the deadline. Cross takes a big leap as a prospect and is a key piece of a 2024 contender.

Stormy projection: all the hitters stay the same or get worse. Witt and Vinny aren't bad players but aren't stars either. The offense struggles to hit for any power and salvy gets hurt. Singer regresses and it looks like it was just a 20 start fluke. No one in the minors steps forward and we continue to have a bottom level system.

There is basically not a single key guy on the roster that you can, with any confidence, say they are going to be amazing next year. There just isn't a track record for anyone except salvy who will always be an injury risk. So as a GM he's in a really tough spot, because where you spend your money is really unknown. Theres no point to sign some high value relievers if the rotation is still bad. You can't really trade prospects for another starter because you don't have any high level ones yet, nor can you be sure that any of the rookies playing next year will still be seen as viable big league players next off season. So he's kind of in no man's land. We probably won't be able to make a judgement about willingness to spend and acquire guys until the trade deadline next year.

If you want to go to the analytics route this team is going to be run like Cleveland and Tampa Bay. If you wanted something else we should have kept Dayton. He always acted like he was poor but he spent plenty of money on guys like Gil Meche, Kennedy, etc... most of them didn't work out compared to the budget signings like Kendrys Morales. But Dayton was the type of GM who put a lot value in the "emotional" boost of signing free agents and keeping players that fans loved. Given Sherman's comments I'm guessing this team is going to be run ruthlessly with absolutely no regard to what the fans want and more toward where the numbers say the value is.

Like Gerritt Cole, Stanton, Turner, Freeman and Mookie Betts etc

Those guys contracts combined are probably close to a billion dollars. There is no way the Kansas City Royals are spending that kind of money, and if they do it'll be to re-sign guys like Witt or Melendez or Vinnie. That's just the reality.

But even then Mookie Betts, Stanton and Turner were trades. They weren't flat out free agent signings. They were able to get those guys because they traded prospects away.

And even then, look at the Dodgers, Kershaw, Urias and Walker Buehler were home grown. So was Tony Gonsolin. A lot of the Yankees pitchers are home grown too, not to mention Aaron Judge. They are not winning because they sign free agents. They're building a really good team then rounding it out with big money guys.

Any chance they trade Salvy while he has value.

Based only on the write-up in The Athletic, I'd probably go with either Lombard or Venable.

i was just pointing out they are partly homegrown and partly not...of course the royals cant do that but that is the blueprint to have a year to year winner and they usually resign their trades

Ha ha, good one. He has negative value. You’d have to give him away free AND write the aquiror a $36M check for the pleasure

Main thing is to keep your own superstar talent and then be able to go acquire the pieces to put your over the top. Royals can do that.

Royals offered Hosmer 144 million. Salvy and Gordon got big deals. Right players will get paid here.

Thank god the Padres were dumber than us. Also paying Hosmer would have crippled this franchise for even more years.

Could you imagine if squints would have agreed to that awful deal? Would have been another skunkhead move that further set the franchise back

The Salvy “deal” was an extension and a dumb one. He had 1 more year on his deal and hit 48 jacks. The 4/80 began with this season, a 22 HR year he was basically worthless

Tampa doesn’t do lifetime achievement awards. This deal was a “Skunkhead special”. Know the difference

Fuck off I showed you before where Salvy has earned the deal and the Royals got a surplus value on his previous deal.
