For all things Royals in 2022. #3 minor league system according to Baseball America. The Bobby Witt era should begin this year. Will Salvy still be the homerun king? How does the glut of infield players work out? Will the young pitchers take the next step?

Royals game update: We're losing

Only losing 0-3 and it's still in the 5th inning but we're on our third pitcher.

Salvy just threw the ball back to Garrett after a pitch and it bonked Garrett in the head. Fun team.

JJ Picollo apparently said the development of Lynch and Bubic is at a point where it's on them to figure it out and the organization is counting in them so he hopes they do..

Way to completely absolve the organization for not developing pitchers while also giving them a terrible pitching coach and manager..

This organization sucks.

Sounds like he is trying to soften the blow of Cal and Methy sticking around...

I’ve moved on from this team. Once football starts it’s just hard watching them.

The Athletic has a depth piece on the failure of Royals pitching development co-written by Rustin Dodd, Andy McCullough and Alec Lewis. It's worth a read. Plenty of bad, of course. There's also some assumptions about Royal's methods that is out-dated. I'm glad they were clear/honest about that instead of just piling on with dated info. That said, there is still plenty to dislike - especially in the area of advanced data interpretation/implementation. Bottom line - I can't believe Sherman will allow this to continue. As the article mentions (and as Sherman has mentioned multiple times in interviews), he admires the system in Cleveland for producing pitchers. I can't believe that he's just going to be hands off about all this.

What's kind of interesting about Melendez is that when he starts walking a ton, bad things happen to his overall game. He doesn't seem to walk because he's seeing the ball well and on a huge heater like an Alvarez or Judge, who you'll see lots of 1-2 2bb type lines. You can almost perfectly break up his best and worst streaks of the season just by his walk rate, or in this case how long it takes him to reach 13 walks.

First 33 games: 844 OPS 13 walks 6 HR
Next 20 games: OPS drops to 744 3 hrs 13 walks.
Next 29 games: OPS rises 30 points 4 HRs 13 walks
Rest of season 26 games: ops drops 60 points 1 HR 18 walks

It's really weird, and almost as if he's taking more walks when he isn't seeing the ball well and it takes all of his power. His OBP stays roughly the same throughout the season, but his average and slugging just crater when he's just talking walks up there. He's a bad version of Adam Dunn when he does that, turning into a three outcome guy except he doesn't hit for power he just hits singles.

MJs defensive metrics are about as bad as any major league can get. His catching metrics are abysmal and that’s where he needs to ultimately end up to max his offensive output.

Rutschman on the other hand is already +16 runs in framing. I’m not a big fan of this metric but it’s one data point. MJ doesn’t throw anyone out either. Can’t play OF. 1B is off the table.

Btw Os are 57-43 since Rutschman was called up and made starter. So that whole wins metric matters too

Framing is so completely over valued it's insane.

Man I essentially forgot about this team for real when the football season started. Life is too short to care about baseball
