For all things Royals in 2022. #3 minor league system according to Baseball America. The Bobby Witt era should begin this year. Will Salvy still be the homerun king? How does the glut of infield players work out? Will the young pitchers take the next step?

O'Hearn would have been perfect pinch hitter for a NL team. He sucks when you start him, but he is a legit darn good pinch hitter for whatever reason.

Gavin Cross is looking like a pretty good pick so far

Some thoughts on Cross from a scout who saw him for three games last week. https://t.co/mMoh10MLXI pic.twitter.com/IjZUU2kLmh

It's because he has a massive split. He hits RHP decent but he is completely atrocious vs LHP. Seems that same trend remained true in his MILB years as well from as far as I can tell he was just so good at RHP in milb and only ok at it in MLB level.

That setup and swing kinda reminds me of Corey Dickerson; just a little less violence in his follow through but plenty of bad intentions. Dickerson never became quite the player I expected him to be, but he had a 5 year run or so of being a REALLY nice ballplayer.

It'll be interesting to see if Cross maintains the plate discipline numbers as he climbs the ranks. As a 3-year college bat and 21 yr old in A ball, he really should be dominant. But some guys just aren't. He's clearly made the transition to wood bats pretty seamlessly so now it's just a matter of getting him exposed to advanced pitching.

Some of you maybe remember Mark Littell...

A Missouri native, Littell split his MLB career between the state’s two clubs. He signed with the Royals as an 18-year-old in 1971, and he reached the majors just two years later. The right-hander struggled over his first eight outings, including seven starts, posting a 5.68 ERA. That’s hardly surprising for a 20-year-old hurler, though, and Littell spent most of the following two seasons at Triple-A.

After a brief return to the majors in 1975, Littell moved to the bullpen full-time by ’76. He thrived in that role, working multiple innings as an old-school fireman and finding great success. He pitched to a 2.08 ERA in 104 innings over 60 outings that season, finishing 37 games in the process. Littell’s contributions even earned him some down-ballot MVP support.

In '78 he struck out 130 guys in 106 innings in a fireman/long-relief role for the Cardinals. That doesn't sound like much now but that's hot fire in that era. I mean there were guys pitching 200 innings and striking out 70 dudes back then.

That's pretty phenomenal. He really did have a 3 year run of dominance there.

EDIT: No seriously, that 1978 season is nuts. A K/9 of 11. Bert Blyleven, a HoFer, was in his prime and was 8th in baseball in K/9....at 6.72/9.

He had twice the K/9 of top 20 guys. Rollie Fingers is out there polishing up his HoF resume with a K% 16.6 while Littell was popping off a 29.1. That really has to be one of the most remarkable under the radar seasons I've ever seen.

Nobody could touch the guy in an era where guys just didn't K. Lary Sorenson threw 280 innings and struck out 78 guys. Dave Rozema and Jack Billingham pitched for the Tigers and between the two of them threw 410 innings and struck out a TOTAL of 116 batters. Throw Jim Slaton in there for Detroit and their top 3 arms threw 643 innings and struck out 207. KC's very own Paul Splittorff struck out a whopping 76 in 262 innings.

For him to throw up an 11 K/9 is really incredible.

Former Royals speedster Terrance Gore is back in the majors, chasing a fourth ring

Terrance Gore emerged from the Mets dugout Thursday, prepared to do what he does best: run.

Gore, the former Royals outfielder, is back in the majors with New York, and on Thursday he pinch ran in the eighth inning of the Mets’ 5-3 win over the Dodgers. Gore stole the 41st base of his career in 103 regular-season games. He has 32 career hits.

“The vibe here is the exact same vibe that I got from the Dodgers,” Gore told MLB.com about joining New York. “Believe it or not, it’s the exact same vibe.”

That’s a good sign for the Mets because Gore was with Los Angeles when they won the 2020 World Series. Heck, just having Gore on their roster is a good sign for the Mets.

With all apologies to Reggie Jackson, Gore is this generation’s Mr. October.

Gore, 31, broke into the majors with the Royals in 2014 when Kansas City advanced to the seventh game of the World Series. The following year Gore won his first World Series ring as the Royals beat the Mets.

That was just the top of his postseason résumé.

The Cubs bought Gore’s contract from the Royals during the 2018 season and he appeared in the playoffs with Chicago that fall.

Gore returned to the Royals in 2019, but was sent to the Yankees in the summer. Although New York advanced to the American League Championship Series, Gore didn’t make a playoff appearance.

In 2020, he signed with the Dodgers who won the World Series after a shortened season due to the Covid pandemic. That was Gore’s second World Series ring.

Last season, Gore signed with the Atlanta Braves and got a third ring, although he appeared in just one postseason game and none in the regular season.

Gore has spent most of this summer with the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate after signing with New York in June. MLB rosters have expanded, so he was recalled by the Mets on Thursday.

He made an immediate impact.

New York leads the National League East with an 84-48 record, so barring a collapse, they should be in the playoff field. That will make it four straight years that Gore’s team is in the postseason and the sixth time in his nine seasons in the majors.
