It does but this blows their whole draft strategy up. They went under slot on other picks to be able to spend big money on Rocker. Hard not to call it a disaster. [Reply]
I don’t know if you can assume GMDM didn’t know “anything”. It’s quite possible scouts noticed something was off compared to his performance last year and it was enough of a concern that they knew his contract would be an issue. Talent like Rocker’s often doesn’t fall to #10 without a reason like this.
The fact that this PR disaster is preferable to the Mets over signing him says a whole lot. [Reply]
@JeffPassan: The New York Mets and Kumar Rocker, their first-round pick, did not come to an agreement on a deal. The Mets will get the 11th pick in the 2022 draft as compensation. Rocker will forgo returning to Vanderbilt and begin his pro career. He is now draft-eligible for 2022.

Gonna play independent...bad advice?
Really can’t think of time going independent went well in baseball. Hochever, I think Appel did it. I may be forgetting a few [Reply]

I was reading that teams have to offer a certain percentage of slot value to get a pick in the next draft for an unsigned player, but in Rockers case he was selected to have his medicals provided to all the clubs. He declined (which is common for a guy expected to go high), so the team that drafted him doesn't have to offer the minimum to get a draft pick next year. [Reply]
Dayton Moore asked by @bobfescoe if he can count on Mondesi in 2022.
"No. You can't. ... We're learning that we're going to have to manage his workloads in ways that he may not be a guy that plays more than 100 games. ... We can't count on him as an everyday player." #Royals
