I don't see what the down side to that would be. He makes $20 million next year and then can opt out or make $13 million for the next 3 years after that. [Reply]

The downside is he definitely isn't going to opt out of his deal, because he's not beating 3/$39M on the open market.
So you're paying the Padres $60M for said prospect in basically a transfer fee. If you get even 6 years of solid MLB starter production from that prospect, you probably come out ahead. But you're paying a lot for it up front. [Reply]
Not that the Royals can afford to do moves like this but buying the prospect by taking on the Hosmer contract doesn't have to block anyone - just release Hosmer as a sunk cost when the time is right or do what the Padres are doing and see if you can trade him with a lesser prospect and take on a bit of his salary. His defense isn't the level of Pratto, but it's still better than a lot of first baseman out there. Not sure if he's a positive in the club house anymore, but if he is, there's that as well for a team looking to turn the corner. BUT...if a top prospect isn't a part of this, considering it is silly. Update: The #Mariners are working on multiple additional trades at this hour, source says; those trade proposals are not limited to replacing the relievers sent to the #Astros in this trade. @MLBNetwork@MLB
