For all things Royals in 2022. #3 minor league system according to Baseball America. The Bobby Witt era should begin this year. Will Salvy still be the homerun king? How does the glut of infield players work out? Will the young pitchers take the next step?

We have acquired RHPs Chandler Champlain and Beck Way, and LHP T.J. Sikkema from the New York Yankees in exchange for OF Andrew Benintendi.

Our roster now stands at 39 players, we will announce a corresponding move tomorrow.

TJ Sikkema MLB.com Profile
Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55 | Overall: 45

Sikkema demonstrates some of the best feel for pitching and strongest makeup in the 2019 Draft, and he topped the Southeastern Conference and ranked third in NCAA Division I with a 1.32 ERA at Missouri that spring. He figured to move quickly after signing for $1,949,800 but had yet to make his full-season debut nearly two years later. His conditioning regressed during the pandemic layoff and he missed all of 2021 with shoulder and lat issues that didn't require surgery.

Sikkema's aptitude to vary his arm angle and manipulate his pitches has led club officials to compare him to a southpaw version of Orlando Hernandez. He can produce 88-91 mph two-seam fastballs with plenty of run and sink from a low three-quarters angle and hit 93-95 mph with four-seamers from a more overhand slot. He can alter the shape of a 78-83 mph slider with high spin rates and keeps right-handers at bay with a sinking changeup in the low 80s.

While Sikkema's stocky body and crossfire delivery are less than ideal, he attacks the strike zone and commands his pitches well. His stuff plays up because of the angle and extension he creates and his abundant confidence and willingness to challenge hitters on the inside part of the plate. Now that he's healthy and in better shape, the Yankees believe he's poised for a breakout and ready to jump back on the fast track as a potential No. 4 starter.

Feel like Sikkema has a better chance than Way. Both of those guys are in A+ and Sikkema is 24 and Way is 23 so it's not all that exciting. Way has better stuff but Sikkema is the one dominating because he can actually pitch. I'd give Sikkema a decent shot to actually make a rotation where I dont even know if Way gets to the majors.

No, no. That’s not how this works. If you need to get multiple players in a deal, they need to be worth MORE than the one. That is how value works

A 4-war guy > two 2-war. He takes up only one roster spot

I don't think that gives enough credit to his control, honestly. At all.

I mean I'm not gonna slap a 70 grade on it or anything, but a 55 is silly. It's at least a 60 (plus) and arguably a 65.

The rest is fair, though. But you give him a 60/65 for command and you'll end up with an overall of 50. I think that might be a shade pessimistic, but nothing wholly unfair.

As for how an overall can be lower than individual categories - eh, pretty basic stuff really. If you have 4 50 grade pitches, that means you have 4 average pitches. Well without a single 'out' pitch or standout characteristic, you're pretty much a AAAA pitcher. That makes you a 40-45 grade prospect.

The overall isn't an average of any specific trait. It's just an overall view of someone's prospect standing. Someone with no standout tools is unlikely to develop into a major league starting caliber player.

Inclined to agree.

If you're gonna trade your quarter, you need at least 3 dimes.

That said, rentals just don't get much these days. They haven't for awhile. The time to make deals for higher quality prospects is typically in the off-season. But unfortunately for the Royals, Benintendi didn't have the kind of season in 2021 that he's having in 2022 so his value just wasn't as high as they needed it to be.

This return is...solid. Unspectacular, but I don't see how you can have expected anything more than this with the market being what it's been in recent years.
