I think what we didn't really consider was the impact it would have on McDuffie's versatility.
Prior to the Watson injury, McDuffie was still being used about 1/3 of the time in the slot, and those are likely usually in those 3rd and short situations that are just killing us right now.
Watson being replaced by Johnson has hurt, for sure. But I think we've seen a real fall off in McDuffie over that period of time as well because he's being used almost exclusively out wide and so teams are attacking that lack of length.
Like you said, it's a real domino effect that's just made everything worse. [Reply]

Yep, off the top of my head, Ravens, Bengals and Jets all took a significant step back on defense as well despite retaining the majority of their core players. [Reply]

We need a 12-15 sack guy at EDGE. George isn't that. Never will be.
He is in his third year, the entire defense is way down on sacks, he has been better than good not great but he is NOT our problem on D. I agree we can't break the bank but I would let Bolton go before Karlaftis at a minimum.

You can't get rid of everyone.
I would think after this season there would be some hard conversation about this because there's some massive holes in this defense now [Reply]
Chris Jones has 51 pressures per PFF which is 2nd to Zach Allen who has more pass rush attempts.
The guy is getting double-teamed every play and some plays he’s triple teamed. Gotta have a DE win their 1v1 reps more often like here.
Hilarious watching the Panthers have 3 guys block Chris :-)
Chris Jones going through a gauntlet to get a sack. 3 different guys try to block him at different points. Thankfully Mike Danna wins his one on one. But Jones is a BEAST. #Chiefs#ChiefsKingdompic.twitter.com/4OPNMGTpaq

Said this elsewhere but it's absolutely true McDuffie has been impacted and not been as good. Everything has been impacted, crazy really. The lack of a pass rush is now painfully obvious too as they don't have forever to get home. [Reply]

He just doesn’t win quick very often, which means he can pretty much be negated when the opposing team can get the ball out quick.
He’s a good player and I really like him. I’d like to see us go DB early and often in the next draft. That can help bring out the most in him.
I’d also trade him before that 5th year. I can’t see paying him big money.
Yep, again, said it before about Karlaftis and made the same point re the secondary in another thread. When he wins, he wins slow, and not that often. Solid and a reasonable complementary piece but without pressure elsewhere this is what you get.
The DEs have been incredibly average this year, in FAU's case poor. If Watson is back, McDuffie shifts to slot etc then it'd go a long way. But either way we're going to need to put more resource into the DL, again. [Reply]

If O City is right and Karlaftis fetches 20m per year, and I doubt he does, I'd go nowhere near it unless there's a big uptick his last 2 years. He ain't that player. [Reply]

The arc he was on prior to this season would’ve gotten him 20mm per. His statistical drop off this season will very likely change that. [Reply]
