ESPN insider names Texans LT Laremy Tunsil as Chiefs trade target

Could the Kansas City Chiefs go back to the trade market to find their left tackle of the future? One ESPN insider is watching a particular player closely if that’s the case.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano recently helped compile some last-minute free agency and trade buzz with the NFL’s legal tampering period kicking off at noon tomorrow. He mentioned that Houston Texans LT Laremy Tunsil could be a trade target for Kansas City if they’re unable to get a long-term deal done with Orlando Brown Jr. ahead of Monday.

Check it out:

What would need to happen for a trade to materialize?

First, Houston would need to decide that they did not want to pay Tunsil a long-term contract extension. That would be a bold move considering they’re expected to draft a rookie quarterback and nothing is better for a rookie quarterback than an established left tackle.

Second, the two sides would have to agree on trade compensation. Would the Chiefs really be willing to potentially give up a first-round draft pick in 2023 (and potentially more) for Tunsil when they’re hosting the draft in Kansas City?

Next up, the Chiefs and Tunsil’s representation would need to first agree to a contract extension that would lower his 2023 salary cap hit. Right now, his cap hit would put the team over the cap.

Finally, Kansas City must view Tunsil as their “long-term solution” at left tackle. Will they envision him as such when he’ll be 29 years old in Week 1 of 2023? There is certainly nothing wrong with his ability — in three of the past four seasons, he’s been among PFF’s highest-graded pass-blocking offensive tackles. They should have no problem paying for that production, but would it be for more than one contract? It’s hard to say. When you draft a rookie in the first round, you get five years of control (fifth-year option), plus a likely sixth year of control through the franchise tag. Then you have the potential of re-signing that player to a long-term deal afterward.

There are certainly benefits to trading for Tunsil, but given what we’re hearing about what the Chiefs want out of the left tackle position this offseason, a trade might not be the route they take.

patrick has now had three pretty bad lower body injuries and played through all three, you'd like to stop the accumulation of issues there before something really bad happens

thank god nothing has gone wrong with his upper body
Mahomes style of play brings that upon himself though. It’s a double-edged sword

Another reason to get the best OL you can!

Tunsil and a 7th, which Veach will use to draft a small school EDGE guy nobody’s heard of who will end his career as the all-time NFL sack leader.

Maybe Veach is planning on Tunsil playing both ways as a LT AND DT so that the money works better

No way Veach is still chasing Tunsil. we've got our LT at this point, and our RT in Niang. I think he'll draft a OT prospect (wright?), maybe sign a vet journeyman OT, and Andy will roll with that. No sense wasting more resources for another $20M/yr OT.

He got banged up scrambling because he didn't have an open receiver, not because of his OL.

When you watch the All-22 of the SB you can see that our guys were clamped up that game too. If a guy got even a little open, Mahomes found him. It's a testament to his greatness, but people who only know how to read a stat sheet will never understand it.

He took everything the defense gave him that day, didn't leave a scrap on the plate. But the retards will still go, "herp derp 200 yards".

Yeah only question for me is if they took a tackle high who they like on the left side and better than Niang, would they consider starting a rookie there and keeping Taylor at RT.

Maybe. It at least makes a lot more sense than throwing draft picks and $$$ at Tunsil, who is undeniably a great pass-pro LT, but commands $25M on his next contract. We just signed a $20M guy, that has the tools and some experience playing LT. Don't see Andy locking up that much in resources for two guys that basically play the same position.

Andy is about weapons, not buying the best fort to hide behind.

Part of the wear and tear on his body is a product of his play style. He will do whatever it takes to score and that sometimes means taking more hits than he should. The high ankle sprain is what it is. Not saying put scrubs on the line, but KC also doesn’t need five All Pros on the line to succeed.

Yeah Tunsil makes no sense, like keeping JJSS when they invest that money in a WR1 doesn't either. No problem paying Taylor 20 to play RT if they get lucky with a tackle as BPA early. Viewing Taylor as flexible bought them a valuable option going into the draft.

Ummm this year and last year weren't even close to as physically demanding as 2020.was it wasn't just the super bowl that he got killed in. That interior line was dog shit, Mitchell Schwartz was playing injured and then was out. He got his ankle hurt early and then reinjured it when dumbass stepped on it. He wasn't nearly as mobile as usual.
