His control has definitely backed up this season. It's concerning. He's far from the only pitching prospect in the Royals system or others to have those type of problems.
He has to throw more strikes. He had been making progress on that until the last start (May - disaster with more walks than IP; June, better, still walking nearly 4.5 batters/9; only 1 BB in his first July start). The upshot is that he's still missing tons of bats, and he's still hard to hit, even with the control struggles. He's striking out nearly 15 batters/9 when I last checked.
His start before that one was his best start as a pro and it looked like it might be starting to come together. If he had strung together a few more appearances like that, I was looking for a move to AA before season's end.
I still like the package and the ability to miss bats is still excellent. [Reply]
The only way this gets exciting is if the Royals take a stab at Will Taylor once we get past the 10th round (Once you get past round 10, you're no longer at risk of losing slot money if you don't sign your draftee, in case anyone had forgotten).
They'd need to find $3.5-4M to do that, and I just don't see that.
Unless Kudrna isn't taking over slot to sign (His slot is $1.73M) and they're getting the guys in rounds 3-5 at some discounts, I don't see where it would come from. They're probably getting Mozzicato at a discount of $1.5-2M, but that only gets you roughly 1/2 there.
I'll be honest, gang. I had time scheduled tonight to write up the prospect list. I'm not sure I'm going to get to it. Just not feeling it RN. [Reply]

There we will select a player ranked between 35 and 50 on every scout's big board.
With their first pick in the 2022 draft the Kansas City Royals select Robert Moore 2nd/SS Arkansas. CP will flip out :-) [Reply]
I'd really like to know if the Royals had a plan that fell apart a little bit today.
Both Will Taylor and the top other undrafted "stock falling" guy (Payton Stovall, an Arkansas commit) have recently released statements confirming they are committed to playing college baseball.
Unless they REALLY believe Monzicatti was the best guy available at their pick, I think they're overpaying or leaving money on the table. [Reply]
I'm sure he grew up a Yankees fan,he was probably hoping they would've drafted him in a later round.I guess it has to be exciting going # 7 overall,no matter who takes you.But oh well, who knows. [Reply]

It didn't turn out like what the Pirates were able to accomplish, but the Royals didn't have the same resources either.
The team took 2 local high schoolers in the top 78, which kind of tells me that this was the plan. There were 2 guys in their own backyard who they had scouted extensively, and liked a lot. We'll know more once we see what the signing bonuses are
I'd say that Day 2 went pretty well. It wasn't a disaster. Some picks have upside for sure, but it all depends on development [Reply]
